Teardrops

This is a collection of songs I made because I made way too much music this other time in 2023 while working on a television score. One-take, not much thought to it. It's also special, in a way, because I was ill during this period. My void was very deep, and I slurred a lot. I didn't hear it then, but it's very apparent now. 

The album title? That's something I wrote down on my  notes app as a name for a music release.

The metadata tells me that this was completed on December 3rd, 2009. It was produced by my homie Rev Raven, and is really about Maseru and the instability that followed the country's invasion in 1998. 

The second verse is about the social conditions that keep the poor under oppression, and I make an attempt to link our local struggle to what is happening globally -- in Brazillian favelas, in Kenya's Kibera slums. 

All oppression is connected.

A braggadocio-filled, horn-and-bass, thumping-drum ensemble of epic proportions. Core Wreckah rides the staunch, didactic production sensibilities courtesy of Cymtom with much aplomb. A good reminder that there still is brilliant lyricism which strays away from trying to be everything all at once.

This is not Sesotho funk. This is not mountain pop. This is hardcore hip-hop delivered with a gutteral growl  akin to the style which has been perfected by the long-standing tradition of Basotho freestyle rappers (liroki), and replete with call-and-response chants which have become a staple of Basotho music.

A song speaking out against police brutality in Lesotho. Recorded in January 2013 on a Hudson Mohawke beat. I read a story about yet another instance of police brutality in the papers one fine early 2013 evening in Cape Town. I got angry, then wrote and recorded this song.

Core Wreckah - Qeka

Core Wreckah, sometimey-expert in the glitchy aspect of rap music, refurbishes Cape Town dub duo Pure Solid's (https://soundcloud.com/pure-solid/) aquatic fineprint of bleeps and echoes to reimburse the true revolutionaries: workmen who build our roads, miners who dig for gold, and truck drivers who deliver the food we eat cross-country. These are, in his view, the people who shape the space within which we exist the most. Yet are the most persecuted in society.

'Do you even think about the guy who picked up your rubbish this morning?', he seems to ask. 

It's the second time Core Wreckah has appropriated a Pure Solid production. Let's hope the trend - this almost-tumblr-like engagement with sound (via soundlcoud/download links/ audio rips) - continues to shape and re-define how we not only engage with our immediate circles, but with spaces which they inherently shape. 

Pay attention to the lo-fi technique with which the vocals have been recorded - a no-hassle, street-level aesthetic, just like the workers Core idolises.

Banna ba tsela (for the workers)

Core Wreckah is a chronicler, a verbal stenographer who is more comfortable telling tales of life in his home-town of Maseru, Lesotho as opposed to fussing over which punchline works best. 
His voice is an outlet for the myriad of thoughts which run rampant through his mind, and rap is the tool he uses to invite the listener into his alternate, off-kilter existence.
