Given the time and the freedom, your thoughts begin going to a million different places - until you pull yourself back into the moment, and all you hear again is the steady and comforting sound of the rain.

John Mackey's homage to progressive metal - specifically the simultaneous mixed-meters of bands like Tool.
Liminality is the quality of ambiguity or disorientation that occurs in the middle stage of rituals, when participants no longer hold their pre-ritual status but have not yet begun the transition to the status they will hold when the ritual is complete. During a ritual's liminal stage, participants "stand at the threshold" between their previous way of structuring their identity, time, or community, and a new way, which the ritual establishes.

"Fight or Flight" is a term used for the stress response stimulated by the sympathetic nervous system in animals. When a threatening situation is detected, such as being confronted by a predator, this response can activate an accelerated heartbeat, heightened sense awareness, and a rush of adrenaline to help the animal prepare to survive through aggression (fight) or escape (flight). As humans, this response is wired into our brains from prehistoric times, and it persists with us today despite the fact most of us don't live with the immediate threat of being hunted as prey. 

Like the fight-or-flight response, the piece aims to create adrenaline from uncertainty. It opens with a mysterious quote from a solo flute which introduces the main theme which is constructed outlined by two different tri-tones in a phrygian mode. This quickly grows through a hopeful build into an action-packed series of events. Driven by syncopated rhythms, harmonic shifts, and dense layers, my hope is that this piece will keep you on the edge of your seat with excitement!
