Description:
I have been working on a new digital synthesiser, the 137FeedBacker. Inspired from all the crazy feedback systems Hainbach loves to explore, plus the sound design philosophies of Vlad Kreimer of Soma Laboratory. More details on my BandCamp and FaceBook page.

The tuning system is microtonal, a harmonic series using the following frequency ratios:
... 5/8 5/7 5/6 5/5 6/5 7/5 8/5 ...
Where the 5/5 ratio servers as the root note, here this was tuned to 600 Hz.

The master timing was 4/4 at 120 bpm (500 ms per beat), but as will be explained later, plenty of poly-meters were used to spice things up.

Track 1:
The led is taken on by the 137FeedBacker synthesiser plus some reverb from the Native Instrument's Raum. There is no time signature for this track, a free improvisation against the backing tracks (no click track, no post quantisation). This was performed on the Ableton Push2, making expressive use of live parameter modulations of the 137FeedBacker via the Push2's rotary encoders. This synthesiser does not accept the conventional midi pitch bend messages, rather it has custom pitch bending with a huge range of some 7 octaves, using either linear or log scaling, this feature was used to full effect, using track 2 harmony as a guide to home in on the target frequencies.

Track 2:
The rhythmic harmonic track is also played by the 137FeedBacker plus my custom three bank audio delay effect, the MultiFeedBack. The rhythmic harmonic patterns were generated in the MDD Snake device (by maximedangles). Plenty happening here with polymeters, the pitch choices  repeated over a period of 7/8, whereas the velocity pattern repeated over a 3/16 period. The delay device (MutliFeedBack), had the first delay bank at 250 ms, second delay bank at (2/1)x250 ms and the third delay bank at (5/2)x250 ms, with some slight timing offsets in the right stereo channel to fatten it up a bit.

Track 3:
The percussion section used a time signature of 7/4, can't go with 4/4 can we?! This was performed on the Ableton Push2.


So a simple two track backing track system (tracks 2 and 3), paving the way for free improvisations for track 1 and 4.

Track 4:
The crazy sound timbres from 137FeedBacker beckoned the Soma Pipe to come out and play. I used the Filterra and Orpheus modes, feeding my own voice into the Pipe. The tuning was not your conventional Western tuning of an equal twelve divisions of the octave (12EDO), but a harmonic tuning of over and undertones, plus the Pipe has no specific dial markings for the resonant frequencies of the Orpheus mode, so I just had to listen to the backing tracks, put some sounds out there and improvise from there, modulating the frequencies both with my voice and the Pipe controller knobs. The Filterra mode comes in at 0min:05secnds - 1:36, playing a purely percussive role, feeding it a rhythmic "sh" sounds imitating a hi-hat. The Orpheus mode comes in at 1:45 - 2:10, providing a pad like harmonic role.
