This track is the first movement of Wadada Leo Smith’s Gold Symphony, the first of his 4-CD box set The Chicago Symphonies. Featuring Smith’s Great Lakes Quartet, the set is out November 19, 2021 via TUM Records.

The Chicago Symphonies represents another magnificent four-disc collection of extended compositions by composer, musician, artist and educator Smith leading his Great Lakes Quartet in a celebration of Chicago and the rich contributions of the Midwestern artistic, musical and political culture to the United States of America. The first three symphonies, “Gold,” “Diamond” and “Pearl” are performed by Smith with three other contemporary masters of creative music, saxophonist/flutist Henry Threadgill, bassist John Lindberg and drummer Jack DeJohnette. The fourth, “Sapphire Symphony – The Presidents and Their Vision for America,” features saxophonist Jonathon Haffner with Smith, Lindberg and DeJohnette.
 
“The idea of a symphony composed for a sextet was first presented by composer/ performer Don Cherry in his classic recording Symphony For Improvisers in 1966,” says Smith. “I have broadened this idea to include the social, political and psychological dynamic into the creative space. My Chicago Symphonies are intended to illustrate and preserve the powerfully unique cultural contribution that the Midwesterners made in helping to shape the American society.”

"Blues for Cecil No. 2" is a track from 2 Blues for Cecil by drummer Andrew Cyrille, bassist William Parker, and flugelhornist Enrico Rava (January 21, 2022, TUM Records). 

On the album, three legends of modern improvised music join together in a tribute to the late, great pianist and bandleader Cecil Taylor (1929-2018). While the players share a common bond through their separate time spent performing and recording with Taylor, the trio represents the first time they played together, first in a tribute to Cecil Taylor, with Taylor himself present, at the Whitney Museum in April 2016. 2 Blues For Cecil was recorded in February of 2021. 

"Blues for Cecil No. 2" is one of four collective improvisations on the album, which also features compositions by each member of the trio, as well as a jazz standard ("My Funny Valentine"). The trio does not seek to emulate Taylor’s approach to creating music but rather draws on all the experiences, separate and shared, of its members. “Cecil was a spokesman for individuality, a musical warrior always operating on a high level,” says Parker. “He was not avant-garde, he was a human being who loves life as music. He would not be boxed in by the music world’s value system that asks artists to conform to their standards.”

"Me Quedo Contigo" is a track from vibraphonist Dan Neville & vocalist Xiomara Torres' album La Voz del Mar, out July 15, 2022 via Patois Records. Recorded on Colombia’s Pacific coast, the album features guest artists John Benitez, Edmar Castañeda, John Santos, Wayne Wallace and Destiny Muhammad. 
The musical seeds scattered across the Americas by the African diaspora took root far from the motherland, eventually bursting forth in an astounding variety of kindred styles, traditions and idioms. Some, like Cuban son, Brazilian samba and American blues, quickly reverberated around the world. But others have been overlooked and undervalued, like the enthralling rhythms and songs of Colombia’s Pacific coast, where generations of Afro-Colombians have nurtured a verdant array of music heard nowhere else in the world. La Voz del Mar introduces the stunning singer Xiomara Torres (pronounced See-o-mar-a), who hails from one of the region’s most illustrious musical families.

"You Are Here (Every Time I Think Of You)" is the final track from Jihye Lee's debut album "April," featuring a 20-piece orchestra of Berklee faculty. The album will be released on February 24, 2017.

A native Korean, Jihye wrote the album in response to the sinking of the Sewol ferry in South Korea, which killed more than 300 passengers.

"You Are Here (Every Time I Think Of You)" is Lee's outpouring of sympathy for those lost and those left behind, highlighted by the aching, sweepingly gorgeous flugelhorn of guest soloist Sean Jones.

“Simplicity" is featured on the first disc of trailblazing Venezuelan-born pianist, composer and bandleader Edward Simon’s double album "25 Years” available October 9 via Ridgeway Records.

“Simplicity” – originally released on Simon's 2005 Criss Cross Jazz album “Simplicitas” – features the pianist with Avishai Cohen on bass and Adam Cruz on drums.

Brimming with arrestingly beautiful music drawn from 13 albums spanning 1995-2018, “25 Years” is less a career retrospective than a personally curated tour through some of Simon's highlights as a recording artist. The double album affirms Simon's status as a key figure in the wave of Latin American musicians who’ve transformed jazz, and features a brilliant cadre of Simon’s closest collaborators including tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, altoist David Binney, bassists Scott Colley, John Patitucci and Ben Street and drummers Brian Blade and Adam Cruz.

At this point Simon has spent far more of his life in the United States than his homeland, but Venezuela still provides the life-sustaining marrow of his music. Born July 27, 1969 in the oil port of Punta Cardón, he grew up in a household filled with music. His father hailed from Curaçao in the Dutch West Indies, and he instilled a love of music in his sons, percussionist Marlon Simon, trumpeter Michael Simon and Edward. The brothers performed music for dancing at local fiestas and events, tapping into an array of rhythms from Venezuela and beyond (they last reunited for a performance together in 2010 as Simon, Simon & Simon). “My older brother played timbales at the time, and we had our band playing parties and anniversaries,” Edward says. “In a way that strong connection with the dance floor and dancers left a great imprint on me. To this day, a groove is an important element in my music.”
Simon was serious enough about the piano that at the age of 15 he left Venezuela and moved by himself to Pennsylvania to enroll at the Philadelphia Performing Arts School, a now-defunct private academy. He continued his classical studies, but he also discovered jazz, and eventually connected with Philly masters like bassist Charles Fambrough and guitarist Kevin Eubanks, who encouraged him to move to New York. Landing in Manhattan in 1988 at the age of 19 he quickly established himself as an essential new voice. A five-year stint with the great altoist Bobby Watson followed a nine-year run with trumpeter Terence Blanchard firmly established Simon as one of his generation’s leading accompanists. All the while he was looking to combine his growing authority as a straight ahead jazz player with his love of Latin American idioms, ambitions that put him at the center of a brilliant wave of fellow South American artists who had also recently arrived in New York. That creative journey unfolds in exquisite detail on "25 Years," an anthology that documents the arc of a culture-bridging artist who’s still ascending. 

As Ted Panken writes in DownBeat: Simon is “one of the strongest pianists of his generation, with intuitive empathy and drum-like ingenuity, and solos compositionally with passionate elegance.”
