As a follow-up to 2009's "Rádio Do Canibal", I sent one of my favorite songs from the album to several of my friends and heroes.I asked them to use their imaginations and take the song somewhere entirely new.The result is five great new tracks featuring a legendary percussionist from São Paulo, one of my favorite MC's ever, a Brazilian record guru, a West Coast beat manipulator, an incredibly talented and prolific composer from Rio de Janeiro, one of my city's best DJ's, and a childhood friend who inspired me to start collecting records...all together on one 12".Here's a few of my favorite moments. By the time Slug recorded this demo, the beat had already gone through 2 or 3 different arrangements.  We stuck with this version, but Slug changed his lyrics before recording the studio version.

Gittit (demo version) feat. Slug  -- prod. by Benzilla & BK-One

Benzilla and I probably made 15-20 beats that never got used on the album.  By the time I started contacting guests, I already had a pretty good idea of which ones would get used and which ones wouldn't.  As a result, the leftover tracks never got finished, sequenced, or mixed.  Thought you might enjoy hearing a couple of them anyways.

There's a couple guests that I wanted to put on this album, but just couldn't work out for one reason or another.  I gave this beat to Boots Riley from The Coup and we talked about recording something, but he was touring with his Streetsweeper Social Club project and I was under a strict deadline to finish the album.  Too bad...I think this would've come out pretty damn funky.

Aby recorded her vocals for this through a laptop built-in microphone, but it came out so beautiful that I seriously considered using the demo version for the album (we had trouble duplicating the sound of her lead-in, so we used that 1 beat of demo recording on the studio version).

I changed the arrangement after Aby sent me this, then brought her into the studio.  She came in, recorded each of her 8 vocal tracks in one take, and that was that!!!  She's just amazing.


Love Like That (demo version) feat. Aby Wolf -- prod. by Benzilla & BK-One

"Here I Am" was originally supposed to be a duet with Grouch and Phonte.  I was excited to put the two of them together, but once they were recorded I didn't feel like their cadences meshed very well.  So at the last minute I cut one of Grouch's verses, added Ali, and re-arranged the order.

If you listen closely, you can hear another change that I made in the studio that is a bit questionable ethically.  I stand behind it though and never heard any complaints.  If you can't hear what I'm talking about, don't bother asking me...I'll never cop to it.

Here I Am (original version) feat. The Grouch & Phonte -- prod. by Benzilla & BK-One

I showed this beat to a couple of our guests (I Self Devine and POS as I remember), but never ended up doing anything with it.  We recorded Sean McPherson playing bass on it, but never mixed it or completed work on it.  I really like this one and think it could have been pretty nasty if we'd ever finished it.

"Blood Drive" was originally going to feature Slug and MF Doom, but for some reason it just didn't work out with Doom.  When Slug sent me this demo, he attached the following instructions for Doom:


"MAP for DOOM

8 bar intro - DOOM DIALOGUE?
20 bar verse - SLUG
4 bar solo chorus - SLUG
4 bar flute bridge - NO VOCALS
20 bar verse - DOOM

tell DOOM don't do stacks on his 20 bar verse.  keep verse one-tracked.

tell him i stacked 3 vocal tracks for the chorus, and explain the layout of the choruses.
have him follow my structure for the chorus, but use his own words.
tell him to put his "stand-ups" on separate 4th vocal track so we can fly his voice onto my chorus and vice versa (I'll say the "stand-ups" in his chorus, he'll say them in mine)."



I love this beat, and I think Slug really killed on here, but when I listen to the album this song sounds unfinished to me.  I almost didn't include it, but Slug really wanted this verse to balance out the "frat rap" quality of "Gittit".

At one point in time, Brother Ali and I were talking about making an album together using my records from Brazil.He got to work on 3 or 4 tracks, and then we got busy with other projects, touring, etc...and that's as far as that album ever went.I eventually retooled the idea, and "Rádio Do Canibal" was the result.I ended up using one of the Ali tracks for the song "Mega", but the rest have just been sitting on my computer.  Until now.

The winning track for my "Tema Do Canibal" remix contest is by Paul Damerau from North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.  I got some really great entries from all over the world (including some trans-continental collaborations), but this was my favorite. Radio K is where I got my start as a DJ. My friend Aaron and I launched an independent hip hop show called The Beatbox on Saturday mornings way back in 1997.  Aaron would make little cut and paste scratch intros, and we'd get local rappers to come record verses for it.  This was the very first one, featuring Slug from Atmosphere​!

Haven't been back in over 15 years.
