I did NOT originally compose this track. Any and all credit for that goes to Studio Pixel, he deserves as much as he can possibly get. All I did was port it to the YM2151 sound chip in Deflemask. THAT IS ALL.

This was my first serious effort with a chiptune tracker, and I think it paid off nicely. Deflemask offers chiptune creation and emulation for seven video game/arcade sound chips.

I picked the YM2151 because it offers many more sound channels than most of the other systems.

However, despite its considerable technological prowess for the time, it still has that old, arcadey sound to it. Just the way I like it. And a perfect match for Cave Story!(^ω^)

I'm considering making another one of these sometime in the near future.
...That is, if anyone likes this one.

Eyes Of Flame (Cave Story YM2151 + Sega PCM Cover) (original song by Pixel)

So here we are again. Another Cave Story YM2151 arrangement.

I know this sounds redundant, I have to say this every time I do something like this:

I can hear the complaints again already: "Why keep doing the same old thing over and over again if NO ONE FREAKING LISTENS TO THIS?!"

Because I'm bored. And also, I plan to do an original project after this.

What is it? You'll see.   ;3

Back to business. So, unlike my first arrangement, where I just used some dude's online MIDI file as a reference for my conversion, this time I used Pixel's original Organya file instead. 

This turned out to be an amazing idea. Why?

Primarily because I could keep as much of Pixel's authentic trademark sound as I could while still adding my own flair.

I also may or may not have gotten tired of working on my PC and my iPad simultaneously.

Or both. I honestly don't know.

So yeah, I used a free application called Organya Twei that basically displays any given Organya file in a piano roll format, and even allows users to create their own songs in the Organya file format.

I may even do that myself one of these days. If you are even slightly considering doing so, I highly recommend it. The format has that sort of retro sound while still allowing for 100 different types of instruments  (even if they are just different variations of basic waveforms lol) and a surprising amount of preset percussion.

Last Battle (Cave Story YM2151 + Sega PCM Cover) (original song by Pixel)

This is an NES cover of "Sin" from Song of Saya created with FamiTracker and the N163 chip module.

For those of you who do not know what Song of Saya is, please don't Google it.

    ==Seriously: do NOT Google it!==
    ...unless you have a really strong stomach.
    It's known as one of the most messed-up games of all time for good reason.
    Let's just say... it's not for the faint of heart.

Anyway, back to the song.

This was my first serious effort in FamiTracker, and I feel it came out quite nicely.

I did my best to recreate the same atmosphere when I first heard this in-game: blissful, but not at all for the right reasons, all the while maintaining a slow, gradual climb to [==CENSORED==].

Now that you've made it past all that, time for a fun post-production note!

Instead of the current song artwork you see right now, I was originally going to use part of an image of Saya with a certain facial expression displayed shortly after she is first introduced in-game.

For those of you who've played it, you know the one. :3
(hint: the word for it starts with an 'A')

But I eventually ended up picking this one for several reasons. Not only do you see Saya like this during one of the most disturbing scenes in the game, but it is in this particular scene that she is firmly entrenched in the dark side and her true colors are finally revealed.

Perhaps this is why "Sin" suits her so perfectly.

Sin (Song of Saya NES + N163 Cover)

This is an N163 arrangement of Necrofantasia, Yukari Yakumo's theme, from Perfect Cherry Blossom (re)created for the NES.

Seriously, where do I even begin with this one?

Some of you may remember that I used the N163 in my last chiptune arrange (https://soundcloud.com/bkbroiler-gc/sin), but as I mentioned before, that was my first real endeavor into FamiTracker. 

This time was completely different.

Since I uploaded that cover, I listened to a particularly impressive N163 arrangement of "Subversive Awareness" from Battle Garegga created by a certain Ratikal (shout-out, my dude :3).

As much as I enjoyed his cover, I also realized one very important thing.

I had to step up my game. BIG time.

And so I did. Over the course of a week or a little less (I can't exactly tell 'cause my head's sorta fried from all this-- I'll explain) I created this monster of a Touhou arrangement to see just what it is I could do, and I even ended up impressing myself in the process.

I ended up using all 8 channels the N163 gave me, as well as every channel except for DPCM. 

     (edit: this was a terrible idea in hindsight) 

I even almost came up against FamiTracker's maximum space limit of 128 rows. I had to cut my custom ending in half just so this thing could fit inside FamiTracker.

And also, there's one other thing you may or may not notice: the NES is only capable of outputting sound in mono, yet this cover is in stereo. 

"How did I manage this?", you may ask. 

The answer is simple: I MADE it stereo. 

I exported each individual sound channel into Audacity (if you do the math from above, that's 12 channels total) and carefully tweaked each channel as an individual audio track where I carefully balanced each channel's individual stereo output.

I put everything I had into making sure every note matched the original song to perfection. Those familiar with ZUN's work will know that this is no small feat. Because of this, this is quite possibly the largest and most ambitious project I've taken on to date.

If there's one thing I'm particularly proud of in this arrange, it's the unique bass sound I created by mixing the triangle wave channel and one of the N163's channels (you can hear it starting from 1:13).

It's also probably why I just don't have the mental willpower to write anything else. Is this what creative exhaustion is supposed to feel like?

Well, whatever the case, please enjoy, because I put a lot more effort into this than I probably should have, that's for sure.
