bacteria grl, an emerging DJ from Eora/Sydney, has swiftly made her mark in the local music scene since her debut in late 2023, delving into the harder realms of techno. 

Although new to music scene, she confronts gender biases that resonate from her STEM background. 
Enduring comments on opportunities and gender, she challenges assumptions about the ease of her journey, refusing to let them undermine her hard work. Undeterred, she persists in her mission to break down gender stereotypes in both the world of music and STEM.

During the course of this project, bacteria grl engaged in profound self-reflection, aiming to inspire others to do the same.

“If you’re a DJ,  I encourage you to consider your latest sets… Did your selection of tracks reflect a balance of diversity and gender equality? 

My own revelation hit hard – my sets were unintentionally disproportionately male-centric. It’s easy to fall into this pattern, especially when our charts predominantly feature male artists.”

This mix explores a forest flourishing with divergent genres that come together through the vines of high BPMs. This ecosystem is home to percussion textures, deep vibrations, and fierce cuts.

While creating this mix, I've been in the middle of getting ready to move into a new apartment. So these intense breaky bits and four to the floors motivate my procrastinating mind. I see myself as a tiny ant, observing these huge sounds from below. And as the fast tempos guide me along the forest floor, I'm carrying parts of home on my back. The alluring vocals and driving force galvanize me to throw things in my bags and say goodbye to a home that was a fundamental safe space during tough years. 

I loved making this mix because I challenged myself to explore the sounds of techno, breaks and bass from current artists. I also kept things on the faster side and aimed to have it 140 BPM or higher (which is already starting high for me since my sweet spot is 130-140, hehe). I had loads of fun digging for sounds that fit inside this forest ecosystem - I hope you enjoy it. ♫꒰･‿･๑꒱

Jesu Stevens a DJ from Chile. She began her musical career as a mixer in 2018, and since then, she has performed in various venues across Chile. She is known for her versatility and ability to adapt to any circumstance. Her musical range spans from deep house to techno, but her charm lies in house music. Her sets stand out for being dynamic and cheerful, with a lot of groove, and her distinctive use of organic instruments such as the piano, saxophone, and vocals. Since the beginning of this year, she has been living in Australia with the goal of spreading her music to every corner on the country’s grand stages.

In this set, Jesu flows with the music of great female figures such as Cinthie, Cassy, and Maya Janes Coles. It’s a set filled with house and experimental sounds.

“The participation in this project was especially important to me. It’s a fact that female presence in various aspects of life is lower than that of men, but this difference increases especially in the music scene. That’s why this type of initiative contributes significantly to making female DJs and producers more visible. As promoters of music and art, our main task is to make women more present in the international music scene. Participating in these kinds of projects, raising visibility, and supporting each other are crucial steps towards women holding a more prominent place in this field.”

I was standing in a VIP line once trying to enter a club I was about to play at, when a guy in front of me turned around and said, ‘The line’s over there. This is for guestlist only.’ While I definitely enjoyed getting to reply ‘I’m a DJ playing here tonight.’, it felt like a reminder of how sometimes it’s hard to be taken seriously as a female DJ."

"As much as it sucks, this isn’t new to me. When I started my engineering degree, it was always 1 girl for every group of 5 guys in groupwork, or it was being talked over, or it was being asked extra questions when getting marked because there’s no way I knew that. While it feels like some days it’s easier to just be a cisgendered man, I’ve definitely learned to love being a woman. In the same vein, being a woman means supporting other women too. They just go hand in hand."

"I looked at past mixes when trying to create this one, and was surprised at just how many DJs featured in my sets were male. "Like so many DJs before me on this channel, it was incredibly rewarding for me to prepare and record this mix! It was an eye-opening moment to realize that the majority of my music library to date included tracks produced by cis men. I'm grateful for the opportunity to rethink that and realize that it really only takes a little more research to actively support and give visibility to flinta* producers and DJs.

In the end, this mix is the result of a longer process in which I kept changing the vibe and replacing individual tracks again and again. I’m sure it's a bit different (especially slower!) than other mixes I've done so far - I hope you like it!

About me: 
In my sets and live mixes I usually try to combine fast beats and stimulating melodic parts to create a spherical mood. I like to play tracks that are energetic and carried by catchy vocals. I usually end up on the techno-trance spectrum.

"Like most of the artists featured on BKIND Music, I have also come to realise that roughly 90% of the tracks in my library are produced by men, which was a bit of a sad realisation. I attempted to exclusively include tracks produced by women, but I encountered some challenges as there were too many gaps to fill and there weren't enough tracks to fit the right key signature, bpm, and mood, making it difficult to curate a cohesive selection. Expressing my sound was a bit of a struggle without resorting to tracks produced by men to fill those gaps, and I've come to realise melodic techno in particular desperately needs more female producers. This podcast has been a huge eye opener, and I genuinely hope more women start to explore electronic music through production and contribute to a more balanced gender representation in the industry."

Nadine B is a Lebanese-Australian DJ and electronic music producer who blends hypnotic, evocative, deep, dark, melodic, and progressive elements with the occasional tribal and ethnic influences delivering highly emotional and cathartic sets and bringing you love, ecstasy, and intensity on the dance floor. Beginning her music career in Beirut and later moving to Sydney in 2020, she found her footing in the Australian electronic music scene, sharing the stage with local legends as well as international artists. In early 2022, she co-founded Templum with the intention of creating an inclusive and transformative electronic music experience, bringing people from all walks of life together into a "sacred dancing space" to come together, set aside their differences and connect with the music, allowing themselves to feel and escape. In 2023, she elevated her music career by venturing into music production and has since released some original tracks that can be found on most major platforms.

Their creativity and kindness have been nothing short of inspiring.
