American @tonebnimble has been a vital part of the dance music underground since growing up in Chicago in the mid-eighties. He's one of those artists who has always stayed under the radar but is a firm favourite with those who know, from Sadar Bahar to Gilles Peterson. Part of that is because of the faultless labels he runs which shine a light on both lesser known and more modern soul, disco and gospel gems. First, there was Al-Tone Edits with Al Bum, and then came Rain&Shine which put out eight volumes of Tone's magnificent Soul is My Salvation series. 

All of these life-enriching sounds old and new are served up on this week's mix in a positively uplifting fashion. It's a glorious selection of soul-stirring songs, funky disco bombs and golden gospel grooves that work in just about any setting, at any time of day. Mixes as irresistible as this are as much education as they are entertainment, and they should really make us thankful for diggers like Tone B. Nimble who work so exhaustively to bring us such high-grade musical pleasures.

Deon is a Detroit native whose roots stem from the crates of family. Growing up hearing many different styles of music in the household is the inspiration behind his range of selection. Inspired by everything from jazz, funk, & soul, to more modern black dance music forms like hip-hop/r&b, house, techno, & brokenbeat. 

His career in Detroit began as resident DJ & organizer for the monthly hip-hop showcase "Bluecollar Gentleman". 
At the same time Deon started working alongside Theo Parrish & Sound Signature, 
helping organize and promote the Music Gallery party series. 

Spending years consuming & working in Detroit's underground would help inform his own more dancefloor/community oriented event, "Healin' Session" as well as the immersive music and art experience, "Black Music".

Recently, Deon was asked by the legendary Theo Parrish to help him selecting artists that he knows in order to be part of a great compilation, representing the originality and essence of the Detroit's sound.

Phonica dives into a new era, or season if you will, of our long established mix series after a stomping 100th mix from London legend Erol Alkan. 
We jump into our 101st mix from one of our most recent Phonica releasee's; French born and Swiss based DJ & producer Lea Lisa. If you some how managed to miss Lea's most recent outing with us we highly recommend it. Taking inspiration from legend Mark Goddard's (aka The Truth) classic "The End", Lea's "Love To The End" is her own various takes on this 1992 UK gem!  And thus is what we see in Phonica mix 101, a crossing of time, styles and blends. Passing through elements of deep, cosmic, tech and jacking styles of house Lea Lisa shows that she shares the divine skills of legends like Kerri Chandler and Ron Trent. Born in Wolverhamption, Mark E has led a slow but steady upward career that has led him to become one of the most respected DJs and producers on the British Isles house scene.

Mark E's idyll with electronic dance music began in his late teens, when Madchester-era Manchester and the irreverent attitude of early '90s raves took the British scene by storm. His first album was nothing less than Bizarre Inc.'s Playing With Knives, which gave him an introduction to the wonderful world of house music. As the years passed, Mark left behind Wolverhampton (a city where he enjoyed a good scene, he was even able to hear legends like John Kelly or Frankie Knuckles) and young Birmingham for his university studies. It is there that he came into contact with an even bigger club scene and where they currently reside.

Mark E's first steps in production were edits of classic songs to which he applied a soft tempo (between 105 and 115 BPM). One of them, titled Scared, and which included Baby, Im Scared Of You by Womack & Womack, reached the ears of Gilles Peterson who opened the microphones of his BBC program to play it. Since then he created his own label, Merc Music, and started to produce his own songs. His remix of Matthew Dear's Little People (Black City) joins the Ghostly International / Spectral Sound family, where he publishes his first album: Stone Breaker (2011).
