i interrupted a casual hook-up in Tower Hamlets Cemetery. well, I
didn't interrupt, I was just sat there, minding my own, with book and
beer, when they noticed me. The couple strode off, heads down, and I
called out "don't mind me". I meant it, who am I to spoil anyone's
sexfun?

The older guy continued walking. The younger guy, shirtless, didn't
follow but stopped to say hi and shake my hand. he sat down next to
me, on my log. i go to the cemetery for peace and seclusion, i guess
others do so too, for their own reasons.

his mum was buried here, he told me. somewhere up by the north gate. i
was surprised, i thought no-one was buried here anymore. today was the
first time he'd seen her grave. he'd been in care from age 5 till a
few weeks back, was just 22, seems that is when they let you out of
care these days. he was just 3 months out of a controlling
relationship of 4 and a half years. down from manchester for 8 weeks,
i asked him what he intended to do. it was his birthday tomorrow, he
thought he'd just hit the gay scene and party it away. his name was
Christian. sorta good looking, freckles down his naked shoulders, but
with a kinda hillbilly face...missing teeth, wide-eyed open gaze.

he spotted my self-harm scars. he cut too, he said, and showed me his.
i go deep, he tells me, showing me his left arm where a plate of metal
replaced the bone that he'd removed. i dig down there there till i get
to something that needs to come out. i was watching Casualty at the
time, they showed me how to do it, surgically. do you disassociate at
the time, i asked? yes, i don't feel the pain, i love it.

we shared a beer and a spliff. we shared stories. high fives on
realising we shared the same psychiatric diagnosis

why did you go into care, may i ask? my dad raped me, some harsh shit.
we talked of his mum, how he didn't blame her, she didn't know, hadn't
seen her last few years, was currently staying in her old flat. his
talk was a bit random; i couldn't figure out when his mum died, two
weeks or a year ago. an angel had told him of her death, before a
social worker had. he was guided to her grave in the cemetery that
day, knew exactly where it was. that's why he stopped to talk to me,
didn't follow the old guy, Christian was spiritual.

he was. and a confused young guy in pain, dealing with the
consequences of some sort of freedom. our talk was broken up by many
silences where we both just sat back on our log in our glade and
listened to the silence.

it felt good, sat there on a log with Christian, still shirtless,
under a roof of leaves. but i try to ration my time with fellow humans
and i said i needed to get back, do some work. he looked disappointed
and called out "bless you" as i took some random path off vaguely in
the direction of the north gate looking out for a gravestone which may
or may not exist with the name Shirley carved on it.
