while desires, unwatched, 
outstrip themselves, 
peopling ruthlessly
in the beating trees,

the stone, warm and buried
in the palm, one last time,
slips into the water, 
not wanting for anything, 
save for a distant hum
and the black indifference
of the blanketing current; 

and fire hides in the ashes,
where no cumbrous expectations
of form
can insult the certain and flat
refusal that finds refuge 
beneath the last clean truth 
that the dark is finally an end to dying.
