Africa Knows Who I Am

New York based DJ & producer, Francis Mercier aka Emvafaya, has utilised his vastly cultured and seasoned understanding of house music to produce and perform different facets of deep, melodic, and tech-house melded with afro, soul, and disco influences. His ‘Bolingo Nanga’ feat. Bibi Den’s Tshibayi track was one of the highlights on ABRACADABRA’s ‘Human Nature’ compilation album on initial release back in April of this year, and now gets a full single release, backed with remixes from two of the scene’s hottest tickets, Nico de Andrea and Nitefreak. Mercier explains more about the gestation of the song…

“On my last European Tour back in Feb 2020, I had a chance to meet some established African vocalists and musicians such as Magic System, Kanda Bongo Man, Amadou & Mariam, and others, one of which was Bibi Den’s Tshibayi who was at his prime in the late 80s. I always had an affinity for Bibi’s unique, and emotive tone, and upon meeting him in Paris at my performance at Radio FG we clicked and his positive energy impacted me on day one. He really loved my set and simply couldn’t stop dancing and requested that I sent him some beats.”

“As such, upon returning to the US, I sent Bibi the musical backing idea and without any surprise, I received his bone-chilling vocal stems. I immediately went to work, spending early mornings and late nights creating what can be heard right now. This being during prime Covid, the lockdown and the prevention of me performing as much as I normally would have been during this time allowed me to sit down and be remotely available to work with Bibi between New York City and Paris. This project being my first authentic afro house record, with a strong message of Love (which is what “Bolingo Nanga” means), has a deep-seated meaning for me, and will always remain the catalyst and inspiration to have me continue down this beautiful path of afro house music.”

Boddhi Satva and Sifa land on Capsule Music with a stunning new single complete with standout vocals from Italian artist LOV. 

Heralded as the father of Ancestral Soul and hailing from the Central African Republic, Boddhi Satva is a DJ and producer that takes people on a spiritual journey with his music. It has come on labels like Defected, Yoruba and Shelter, and here he works with Sifa, a long time creative talent from Brussels who has brought unique Afro styles to music on a range of labels. Vocalist LOV completes the trio and is a London based Italian who has seen her talents on impressive labels like Armada Subjekt and Mother Recordings in the past, and continues to impress with her hugely emotive tones. 

Fading To Silence is a devastatingly emotional track thanks to the seductive delivery of those vocals. Impassioned, tender and pained, they are heart aching and sensuous, while the deep, rolling drums and sprinkling of Afro percussion below keeps you locked. Exquisite synth work brings another layer of depth to this most superb of singles. 

Synthapella and instrumental mixes add different perspectives and make this a vital new package.

Bristol’s Remotif makes his highly-awaited debut on space•lab with his wormhole of a new EP, ‘Substation Fever’. Kicking things off on the A side, the title track enters the scene with spacious, organic drums, building in energy as we tunnel through its course; travelling from the cool, oxygenated air of a forest-scape into dazzling, far-reaching intergalactic realms. 

Next up, ‘Substation Fever’ gets a dreamy reimagining courtesy of Leeds legend and space•lab regular, Adam Pits. Channelling the energy of Remotif’s original into a hazy, blissed-out cloudscape, this track was made for accompanying early morning sunrises where orange-hued dashes of light reflect off the surface of gently rippling water. 

On the flip side, ‘Hi Tek Lo Life’, crackles with the fluctuating electrical impulses of a TV without signal or a radio between channels. Flecked with corroded vocal samples and billowing synthlines, this is a track that explores the inbetween - the moment when connection is almost lost, but not quite. There is a beauty in the roughened-edges of these partially obscured details. 

The final track of the EP, ‘The Signal Prevails’ is perhaps an answer to its precursor. Opening out onto trip-hop-esque terrain, this track follows the path set out by a blurred-out, echoing vocal as it deftly works its way through narrow, winding pathways of powerful 90s-style breaks. 

A much-loved DJ regularly making an appearance on space•lab’s lineups, we are delighted to now showcase Remotif’s skill in the studio with this mind-opening new EP.

DJ Kabila and Victor Sithole's timeless collaboration off the former's "A New Dawn" album receives an exhilarating reimagination by Caiiro, FNX Omar and Lemon & Herb. Building on the original's momentum, the remixers cultivate the dynamic spirit of "Bayede" while pushing boundaries within the ever-expanding realm of Afro house. Preserving Victor Sithole's illustrious vocals and DJ Kabila's solid foundation at the core, the gifted producers each contribute their unique touch, breathing new life into "Bayede'' that resonate deeply with its roots while thrusting the track's horizons to fresh altitudes.

Caiiro's vibrant remix blends intuitive African rhythms, organic instrumentals, and pulsating cadences. Fueled by spirited drums and captivating syncopations, this rendition sustains an irresistible groove. FNX Omar presents a prismatic tessellation of eclectic beat patterns, enigmatic progressions and textured sounds, weaving a deep and lasting sonic cavalcade. Lemon & Herb wraps up with a euphoric interpretation, gracefully entwining Victor Sithole's soulful vocals with celestial ambience and ethereal melodies. 

From poignant riffs that evoke nostalgia to profound basslines that beckon the dancefloor, these exceptional remixes not only showcase Afro House's power to bridge the past, present, and future but also, in the true essence of "Bayede," stand as a testament to the agility of tradition that endures and binds generations through time.
