Monique Wittig fue una importante activista lesbiana y feminista francesa que no sólo formó parte en los 70 de los inicios del “Movimiento de Liberación de las Mujeres”, también contribuyó a la creación del primer grupo de activismo lésbico parisimo en 1970, “Feministas revolucionarias”, luego devenido “Gouines Rouge” (“tortas rojas”) en 1971. Su pluma y su pensamiento han cruzado el feminismo materialista y el lesbianismo radical, con la ciencia ficción y la poética activista.

A finales de los setenta, Wittig revolucionó el campo de los estudios feministas con la publicación de “El pensamiento heterosexual”, obra que se ha convertido ya en un clásico y que supuso uno de los hitos precursores fundamentales de la Teoría queer. Con su mítica frase, “las lesbianas no son mujeres”, pronunciada en el simposio por el treinta aniversario del “Segundo sexo”, Wittig defiende "la heterosexualidad", más allá de las prácticas sexuales, como régimen político.

El dispositivo heterocentrado consiste en una pluralidad de discursos sobre las ciencias llamadas "humanas" que producen e instauran heteronormas en materia de sexo, de género y de filiación. Una novedad importante de este ensayo es que también se va a enfrentar a la corriente del feminismo tradicional (ella lo llama "hetero-feminismo"), que había promovido la identificación con "la mujer", y con "lo femenino" en detrimento de otras cuestiones que planteaban las lesbianas (in-visibilidad, posible identificación con lo masculino, prácticas sadomasoquistas, criterios de raza, clase social, etc.)

La resistencia que muchas de sus ideas produjeron y particularmente en el movimiento hegemónico de mujeres, dan cuenta de lo poco conocida que es, a día de hoy, su obre e historia pese a la brutal repercusión que sus reflexiones han tenido en el movimiento feminista. Debates que, a nuestro modo de ver,  a día de hoy continúan profundamente vivos y donde su legado merece ser reconocido y repensado a la luz de estos nuevos tiempos.

En esta sesión introductoria abordaremos los principales aportes de Wittig al pensamiento feminista narrados a partir de las discusiones que se dieron en el movimiento feminista francés cómo internacional y las consecuencias y repercusiones que tuvo en la movilización lesbiana en el estado español.
