검은 하늘이 태양을 감추고 빗방울은 세차게 창문을 두드렸다. 우리가 이곳에 머무른 지 며칠이 지났는지 생각에 잠겨갈 때 즈음 누군가가 문을 두드리는 소리가 들렸다. 누군가 올 것을 예상이라도 한 듯 동료 중 한 사람이 자연스럽게 문을 열었다. 문이 열리자 방안으로 시린 공기가 밀려들어 왔다. 동료는 무언가를 받아들며 즐겁게 이야기하기 시작했다. “슬슬 출발하지 않으면 안 되겠어...” 나는 중얼거렸다. 나는 조급했다. 앞으로 얼마나 더 가야 할지 알지도 못하는데 이렇게 멈춰 있을 수만은 없었다. 나는 이야기를 꺼내려 고개를 돌리자, 문을 닫으며 그가 말했다. “할 이야기가 있는데, 이거라도 먹으면서 이야기할까?” 조금 전 받아든 것을 들어 올리며 말했다. 그것을 물끄러미 바라보고 있자니, 그는 다른 동료들이 있는 곳으로 걸어가며 나에게 손짓했다. 나는 들리지 않을 정도의 작은 한숨을 쉬고 모두가 있는 곳으로 걸어갔다. 잠깐 동안의 정적이 흐른 뒤 동료 중 한 사람이 입을 열었다. “우리가 요 며칠간 이곳에 머무르면서 생각을 해봤는데...” 그리고 다시 정적이 흘렀다. 한여름의 습한 공기처럼 답답하고 무거운 기분이 몰려왔다. 그러자 다른 동료가 먹을 것을 건네며 입을 열었다. “비가 너무 거세서 당분간은 출발할 수 없을 것 같은데 이왕 이렇게 된 거 우리말이야...” 나는 그 말을 끝까지 듣지 않은 체 등을 돌렸다. 언제라도 출발할 수 있도록 나의 짐은 싸져 있었고, 나는 밖으로 달려나갔다. 당장에라도 얼어붙을 것처럼 차가운 빗방울이 나의 얼굴을 때렸다. 이 비가 그치고 나면, 완연한 겨울이 올 것 이다.


Darkness of the sky hid the sun, and the raindrops started to hit the window side. I was counting how many days we spent in this place, and someone knocked on the door. As it was expected to have a visitor, one of the colleagues got up and opened the door. Through the open door, chill air entered the room. The colleague received something from the visitor and started to talk with excitement. "We gotta start moving..." I whispered. I was anxious. We can't stay in because we don't even know how far we should go. As I turned my face to talk about this, the colleague closed the door and said, "I have something to say. Shall we take a bite and talk about it?" He lifted up the thing he just got. As I was watching him, he walked to other colleagues and waved at me. I sighed as no one in the room could hear and walked to the other people. After a while of silence, other colleague started to talk. "I've been thinking as we stayed here for few days..." and there was another moment of silence. The atmosphere was heavy and pressured like the humid air in mid-summer. Another colleague passed around the food and said, "I guess we can't start moving in this rain, and just because of all this, let's..." I turned around before he finished the sentence. I packed everything so we can leave any time, and I ran outside. Icy cold raindrop started to hit my face. After this rain, there will be a complete winter.

As the time filled with stillness and calmness went by, the light unpleasantly descended on my face through the window. The chill in the room seemed to freeze me, who was trying to stand up, forever unlike my thought. As usual, I caught my breath for a bit, erected myself and looked out of the window. The sky was crystal clear as if frozen, which made me so sad. Looking at it with vacant eyes for a while, I moved at a sound of everyday life irrelevant to me. After having a short habitual talk, I left home as always. There was a long walk on the left side of this street I walked along almost every day, and I had no question or worry about this behavior taking this street. Everything was same and so familiar, which made me start to feel small anger and despair inside me. That anger and despair caught me unusually. I made a stand and slowly touched the wall next to me. It was so cold. That coldness was like me, who had no question or worry. Only what seemed to be telling me that I was alive was my heart beating disgustingly. I was at a loss. It looked like that the sadness and despair that day got bigger and bigger and were about to prey on me. I stopped all my everyday behavior, sat on a bench on the right unusually and then waited for the anger and despair to subside. After a while, unusual things met my eyes. A small cat, as if to head for somewhere, caught a little rat, and then rolled and bit it to kill it slowly. Next to them, a flower that bloomed before I knew it was lowering its head and dying already. The sun went d own and the stillness and calmness were about to visit me. Slowly, I stood up and turned my steps towards an unfamiliar street unusually. 

 적막함과 평온함이 가득한 시간이 지나 빛은 창문을 통해 나의 얼굴에 불쾌하게 내려앉았다. 방안의 냉기는 일어나려는 내 생각과는 달리 나를 영원히 얼려둘 것만 같았다. 평소와 같이 나는 몇 번의 숨을 고르고 난 후 몸을 일으키고 창밖을 바라봤다. 하늘은 얼어붙은 것처럼 덧없이 맑았고 그것이 나의 기분을 너무도 슬프게 했다. 그렇게 멍하니 하늘을 한참 동안 바라보다 평소와 같이 나와는 상관없는 생활의 소리가 나를 움직이게 했다. 몇 마디의 습관적인 대화를 마치고 평소와 같이 집을 나섰다. 매일같이 걷는 이 길 왼편엔 기다란 담이 있었고, 이 길을 걷는다는 행동에는 어떠한 의문도 고민도 없었다. 모든 것들은 평소와 다르지 않았고 너무도 익숙했다. 그것들이 나의 안에 작은 분노와 작은 절망을 만들기 시작했다. 그 분노와 절망은 평소와 다르게 나를 잡아 세웠다. 나는 멈춰 섰고 천천히 옆에 늘어선 벽에 손을 댔다. 너무나도 차가웠다. 그 차가움은 마치 아무 의문도 고민도 하지 않는 나와 같았다. 오로지 역겹게 움직이는 내 심장만이 나를 살아있다고 말해주고 있는 것 같았다. 나는 당황했다. 그날의 슬픔과 절망은 점점 커져 나를 잡아먹으려 하는 것 같았다. 나는 평소와 같았던 모든 행동을 멈추었고 평소와 다르게 오른편에 늘어선 벤치 중 하나에 앉아 분노와 절망이 수그러들기를 기다렸다. 어느 정도의 시간이 흐른 뒤 눈앞에는 평소와는 다른 모습들이 비추었다. 작은 고양이는 어딘가 향하는 듯싶더니 이내 작은 쥐를 붙잡고 물어뜯고 굴리고 천천히 죽여갔다. 어느샌가 피웠던 꽃은 그 사이에서 고개를 숙이고 죽어가고 있었다. 해는 지고 다시 적막함과 평온함이 찾아오려 했다. 나는 자리에서 일어나 평소와 다르게 익숙하지 않은 길로 천천히 걸어갔다.
