The Idjut Boys and Laj (one of Ray Mang man Raj Gupta’s lesser-known aliases) were once regular studio partners, laying down a series of now legendary dubbed-out disco and deep house releases on the former’s U-Star label during the mid-to-late-90s. Now one of the trio’s lesser-known gems is returning to record stores for the first time since 2002, courtesy of Claremont 56.

“Slateo” first appeared on the 2002 Session Recordings label compilation Solidsession Vol. 2, the CD version of which was mixed by the Idjuts and also contained a fine cut from Akwaaba, a band whose members included future Claremont 56 founder Paul “Mudd” Murphy.

Built around undulating bongo beats, fireside-warm dub bass, outer-space chords, delay-laden guitar flourishes and spacey jazz-funk synth solos by regular collaborator Pete Z, “Slateo” sits somewhere between warm-up gold, late night bliss and early morning release. In true Idjuts and Laj fashion, it boasts epic amounts of reverb and dub delay, as well as the kind of enveloping production that’s always been a hallmark of their collaborative work.

16 years after the track first slipped out, it’s appearing on a single-sided 12” single, pressed to gorgeous green and white vinyl. With only 350 copies available worldwide, pre-orders are recommended.

For the 5th time now, Nemoy managed to convince actual musicians to release something on his largely unsuccessful label. And oh boy, are those some actual musicians this time! Marlow and his partner in crime Rainer Trüby came up with a lush, deep house stomper featuring a little vocal shred we all think we know – but we really don’t! They are not so much into the obvious sample digs… Combined with some crazy hi hat work and all the minor 9th chords you can possibly handle, „U Know How I Feel“ makes you feel like they really do know, how you feel. Azaxx took all this and turned it into something completely different. To be honest, he might just have created an entirely new genre of soulful electronic dance music. Outstanding drum programming and the exact right amount of „when is that beat coming back again?!“ make his remix a very unique ride. Nemoy made a version too. He challenged himself to use the cheapest, most unintuitive and terrible synth you can imagine for this. And he made it sound like a Million Dollar. The shuffle on this one is a very weird animal – but also a very fluffy one. Go get it, before the others do! There are only 200 copies around!

"Though his solo productions tend towards the weird, wild, and far-out, Raffaele “Whodamanny “Arcella has an incredibly well-honed pop sensibility, one that is often on full display during his energetic DJ sets and mixes. There you will find delirious collections of Italo dance magic spanning several decades, with Whodamanny cutting ecstatically between all manner of vocal oriented and neon-hued proto-house, synth pop, disco, boogie, and funk. And on the The Dance Sucker 12″, he perfectly combines his interests in futuristic sonic experimentation with the balearic euphorias of these club sets, resulting in some of the strongest and most surprising material yet to come from Periodica Records and the West Hill Studio. I say surprising for several reasons, not least of which is the presence of Arcella’s voice, which here is deliciously foregrounded…a sort of expressive croon moving through sultry serenades, summertime hooks, and sexual soul whispers. The 12” is also a marvel of synth programming, as every non-vocal sound here, including drums, has been sourced from the artist’s beloved Cazio CZ-101…a fact that is all the more remarkable given how colorful and physical everything is, with fat greasy basslines and infectious electro-rhythms dancing beneath a canopy of sci-fi squiggles, synthesized fusion solos, and pads that waver like a mediterranean mirage."
