Y2K saw the release of Total Science’s anthem ‘Champion Sound’ Hardcore Will Never Die remix. Lurching into a new millennium, with promises of system meltdown, the end of civilisation as we know it and all other sorts of madness, its dissonant and edgy feel captured the moment perfectly. And consequently it was almost impossible to go to a Drum & Bass rave and not have this soundtrack of 2000 pummelling your eardrums then, and also ever since. 

Seen as one of the defining tunes of the genre, it has now spawned it’s own spinoff series, ‘The Hardcore Will Never Die Years’ remixes. Promising several remixes of some of the duo’s most seminal tracks from the early 2000s, from some of the biggest and best producers in the scene currently, we can now be assured of a whole host of new dancefloor weapons. 

And starting the series in true style is Break, with his ridiculous remix of ‘Squash’. A massive tune in it’s own right, ‘Squash’ was always going to need a serious working over to be bettered; and if you could trust one man to do it, it would be Break. Keeping all the original elements, brining them up to 2022 standard and then injecting his own trademark to proceedings, we are now left with everything that is good about this music in Y2K22.

The cold, sharp light of the full moon wrapped each of them in its bitter grasp, tendrils of the deepest anger and regret encircling them as the shadows from the dense branches of the grim forest of their surroundings. Blood flowed darkly from the head wound, a growing treacle puddle reflecting the moon above in its metallic embrace, each of their faces around it mirrored darkly in that slowly expanding pool of their brother’s end. The curse that had escaped his lips as he realized the betrayal was seared into their ears, the final glance spiked through with heartbreak entwined in deepest hate burned into their retinas. But for all their regret, their patriarch had spoken, made himself clear… the family is violence, but it is not the twisted pleasures that he had chased, and the family line, when crossed – is the very end of consciousness.

L 33 cracks open 2018 with his inimitably heavy style of ultra funky and future-focused neuro on home imprint, Eatbrain. Following up his much-loved, cornerstone ‘KARATE LP’ on the label, the MAFIA EP delivers 5 tracks of the kind of hard-hitting, purely dancefloor drum & bass that L 33 has come to be known for, with LIGHTS OUT also featuring the smooth but sinister vocals of MC COPPA delivering the vibes. SINISTER SOULS returns to OTHERCIDE RECORDINGS for his latest EP “PLEASURE OF
PAIN”, which follows a selection of their recent releases across labels including PRSPCT
Recordings, Mindocracy Recordings, and their 2019 single on OTHERCIDE “Spider//Hatred” as
part of an increasingly intense torrent of output from the longtime crossbreed and bass music
veteran. Building on such sturdy foundations, PLEASURE OF PAIN finds ample room to
continue to display the signature SINISTER SOULS sound, standing as a decisive statement of
intent as SINISTER SOUL’s first release of the new year.
PLEASURE OF PAIN sweeps into being on the electrified basslines and cinematic chords of its
title track, which surges forth from a subdued atmosphere to provide a dynamic entrance for the
EP’s sonic character. EAT BRAINS then follows with a set of distorted kickdrums and arpeggios
that seem to rise and fall endlessly between the respective portions of its tense breakdowns and
frenzied main sections.100 LIVES features collaboration with MC KRYPTOMEDIC, who delivers
a dense deluge of lyricism atop a track equally dense with percussive elements and metallic
timbres that ripple throughout the track with unrestrained kinetic potential. FLAWLESS closes
the EP as a combination of its myriad elements, combining the rapid arpeggios of EAT BRAINS,
the cinematic flair of PLEASURE OF PAIN & the raw energy of 100 LIVES for the creation of an
audio sequence that does well to live up to the lofty goal suggested by its name.
With PLEASURE OF PAIN, SINISTER SOULS marks his entrance into the new year on
OTHERCIDE RECORDINGS with an EP filled to the brim with destructive sonic power,
foreshadowing the coming of further works crafted of the same wicked sonic character so
