2014 stands as a defining moment for the RAM Records imprint. Not only did it announce the pivotal signing of artists like Audio, Teddy Killerz and Bensley but they also oversaw the birth of compilation series RAMLife hosted by Loadstar. Even in its first form, it contained nearly every essential release the last twelve months had to offer. 

But this year, RAMLife is taking you into deeper and murkier dimensions. Having already flexed his production muscle on the ricocheting, four-track ‘Nil by Mouth’ EP, as well as his first visual debut in the music video for ‘Heads Up’, it’s now time for Audio to cut open and expose his musical psyche. 

Including some of the most aggressive, technically adept and prominent artists the genre has to offer, including Bad Company, Optiv & BTK and Noisia to name a few, no stone goes unturned for the album’s entirety. EATBRAIN gain another slick addition to the collective, with the latest release landing from relatively fresh Antwerp-based duo,
HYPOXIA (Titan Records // DnB Arena). Members Athys and Syntopia craft a brand of Tech and Neuro DnB with a bleak
aesthetic influenced by the more sinister areas of Psychology. The ‘ANOVA’ EP takes its name from the Analysis Of Variance
statistical method, with the change here being the sinister journey into an internal void during the inception of its components.

‘PSYCHOSIS’ hits straight with its crisp percussion and cutting snare - the drum phrase accented by a hypnotizing Technoinfluenced
plucked synth. A build-up arrives like a Nitrous Oxide-fuelled descent into a single point of madness, before coming up
with fists swinging into its abrasive groove and evolution into a relentless wall of carefully crafted distortion. ‘Psychosis’ provides an
overwhelming vortex of filth with an agenda to disturb the mind and take control of the feet.

Night has fallen, the threat of extinction riding on the edge of its transition. An arsenal of sonic weaponry residing within the lines of his palms, drawn forth through the ancient forms manifested by long-dead masters. His swift movement amongst the shuffling army is efficient - acute strikes snap limbs, raw concentrated power crushes bone, low-frequency techniques leaving little behind from the weight of brutal molecular disruption. With the rising of the sun, only he remains – the broken dead lying scattered and without motion – the focused power of his fighting form has prevailed… the signal is preserved.

Standing for five years of innovation, the ‘Go Nen’ LP from Santoku represents half a decade spent by its label head crafting its most innovative releases. And alongside another game changing compilation, Logam has offered up fourteen brand new records which will signify why they’ve become such a revered icon within drum & bass, from the UK to the US. The LP also stands as a defining moment within the label’s evolution, drawing from their roster o a hugely diverse list of artists to present the whole colour wheel which has enabled Santoku to garner such a widely acclaimed reputation.

Whether it’s the neuro-infused cuts of Mean Teeth, or the impenetrable production standard of Mayhem and figurehead Logam, their next ‘Go Nen’ sampler highlights a host of musicality which is displayed throughout. The best way for an album of this calibre to open is with the first collaboration between Logam & Mayhem ‘Centuria’, but it moves forward across a twisted skeleton. Amoss takes on ‘Centuria’ and brings it into a darker realm, nodding to the previous releases which have held Santoku in such high regard. Also featuring on the LP are brand new selections from the likes of Uttersounds, who offers up the pounding riddim ‘Size Up’. Sequential’s ‘Mass Transfer’ alludes to the contemporary digital era drum & bass has found itself developing in whilst Symplex & Camel jump on board for the understated yet melodic ‘Twilight’. Celebrated American newcomer ‘Des McMahon also makes an appearance with a switch up of ‘Dopamine’, presenting a carefully packaged VIP and Kodin adds his tearaway track ‘Valetudinarian’. Todd Buchler, Pish Posh & HammerZz add their sonic delivery ‘Fuego’, which plays to its namesake with hard-hitting drum patterns and crafted hooks. Then for the last exclusive, you’re introduced to Logam & Roger’s ‘Emrys’, the perfect manifestation of what Logam inherited with Santoku’s legacy.

This LP will sit pride of place within the label’s history and they continue to push the boundaries with every release. The ‘Go Nen’ compilation clearly shows that, creating a dynamic and versatile track listing which will further define the imprint’s worth within a colossal dance music market.
