This is from a classic holiday song that I was challenged to recreate during my #StraightOutTheBox segment, which takes place in the DC metro area, Okay here's the short of it. I play music in public and encourage others to showcase their talents. The ultimate goal is to bring folks together through music and create some great moments along the way. Thanks to the gentleman that issued the challenge (name escapes me but he works for DC govt.)

Brown University psychology professor, Malik Starx, has joined forces with producer Stephon Alexander, a theoretical physics professor at Brown University. The results include jazzy, Afro-Caribbean styled-single “Dancing for Freedom,” alongside Sierre Leoneon vocalist Kanjia. This song is designed to spread joy and knowledge through music and dance.

“Dancing for Freedom” gives a new interpretation of the caged bird’s song. He sings to remind himself that he is a free bird, caged. “Free” is the essence. “Caged” is the situation.

Dancing for freedom is celebrating one’s essence despite the situation. The essence is a muscle that, when exercised, will sometimes break the bars that bind you.
