Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's classic LP 'Mecca and the Soul Brother' turned 30 recently, so reminisce for a spell with a mix of OG Samples, Remixes, & Blends.
The way Pete sampled old jazz/funk/soul records and layered them over hard, dusty drums was masterful (how he caught that little part on the fadeout of an Ohio Players record for 'Lots Of Lovin' still amazes me).    
Combine that with C.L.'s sharp yet fluid lyricism (how many MC's could rhyme like THIS back in '92??), and you unquestionably have one of the pillars of early 90's NYC boom bap.

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Edition #2 of this mixtape series pays tribute to the Hip Hop of 1988, a year which many consider the ‘golden year’ of the late 80s. As samplers took over from drum machines as the producer’s tool of choice, the James Brown drum sound ruled supreme and lyrical subject matter explored new territory. With seminal (and at the time controversial) album releases from the likes of Public Enemy and NWA, this was a year that changed hip hop forever. This mix features classic cuts from singles and albums released during this important year. Artwork pays homage to iconic late 80s imprint 'Fresh Records'.

The mix combinies a bunch of Tip’s productions, verses, samples, interviews and more. From A Tribe Called Quest to Solange, Nas to Quincey Jones, the mix explores all aspects of this man’s genius.
 
There are very few artists that can claim such impact on an entire genre, but A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip can do just that and more. As a member of what is widely agreed to be the greatest Hip-Hop group of all time, as a solo artist and as a producer for the great and the good, Q-Tip’s impact is immeasurable. Through his influence on the likes of J-Dilla, Kanye West and Pharrell, his influence can still be heard throughout all forms of Hip-Hop and Soul. Keep Bouncing!
