This song started with a chorus. I heard a Vince Staples track where the hook kept ringing in my head — “oh my mama, oh my mama” — and it really inspired me. I didn’t want to copy it, but I wanted to extract that feeling and flip it into my own world, my own vibe. From there, I started writing with more energy in mind, something upbeat, something that felt alive.

But once I found the instrumental, everything shifted. The beat was smoother than I expected, and after a lot of punching in and really designing the chorus, the song turned into something calm, reflective, and soulful. Not what I originally planned — but exactly what it needed to be.

Lyrically, this song is about the lessons my mom gave me growing up. All the things she told me as a kid, all the wisdom that stayed with me even after she was gone. I made this in December and decided to drop it now because December holds weight for me. My mom passed away a few years ago — three or four — right before Christmas. During COVID, I was stuck in Spain and couldn’t even make it to her funeral. That time left a lot unprocessed.

This track is my way of doing something for her. A reflection. A thank-you. A moment to finally celebrate her spirit and everything she gave me. It’s important to me not just because I think it’s a bop, but because of what it carries.

Shout out to my mom.
