Founding member of Sonic Youth and Chelsea Light Moving, Thurston Moore joins The Solo Series with two original compositions paying homage to N16 London and international communicatzian actions.

Thurston moved into our neighborhood and attended the launch of the Douglas Hart 7" we did in May of the same year in London, at the event we asked him if he would be interested in contributing to the solo series.

Thurston Moore 7"  - A side - Detonation

Thurston Moore returns to North London independent record label Blank Editions with a new extended space age composition for the cassette series, Blank Tapes.

Inspired by the comet-chaser Rosetta presently orbiting an epic journey to 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko, Sonic Youth founder Thurston Moore sings to the spacecraft "you were born to catch her light / and revel in her flight / before she goes too far / to unnamed stars / into deepest solar reaches / past all she has yet to teach us...." with heavenly accompaniment by Hush Arbors on guitar, Samara Lubelski on ethereal violin and Sunburned Hand of the Man's John Moloney on drums. This original seven minute and twenty second song is a rare treat from this group recorded to honour Sun Ra on the occasion of his Earth-birth centennial.

Side B'a "Rebellion of Joy" is a bliss-metal excursion of four minutes and twenty seconds splendid in instrumental chaos sounding much like the cassette's cover artwork: Sun-drenched goddesses smeared into a black magick skull galaxy.

Produced by Ecstatic Peace Library in the name of Thurston's unending love of the cassette tape format. Offered in a limited edition of 700 copies and presented in a library case with a full colour printed j card featuring collages by Julien Langendorff.

Blank Editions previously released Thurston Moore's radical springtime protest single "Detonation." Thurston Moore's forthcoming full length record "The Best Day" will be released later this year by Matador Records also on cassette tape!

004 Ted Milton 7"

Ted Milton is known as the primary song writer and creative force behind Blurt. He is also the only remaining original member since their 1979 formation in Stroud, Gloucestershire.

The seven-inch single is the latest release in a long history that includes a series of singles on Factory records and sharing the stage with Joy Division, Cabaret Voltaire, and A Certain Ratio.

Following the tradition of previous entries in the ongoing Solo Series, this limited edition single arrives in a card sleeve that is stamped, hand numbered and finished with a special insert that is linked to the video for the A side.

Flotation is taken from the debut recording from Ben Vince entitled The Purge.

Tenor Saxophone melodies and drone which serve as 
foundations that constantly evolve, turn and loop.

The entire recording pulses with warmth and soul as 
jazz-inflected motifs and signatures create a launching pad 
for experimentation that contain a post-punk familiarity yet 
a maturity that is not often on display in debut recordings.

Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and Brooklyn-based drummer Ryan Sawyer along with UK-based members of Thurston Moore Group: bass player Deb Googe (also of My Bloody Valentine) and guitarist James Sedwards (also of Nøught) met up in the studio to record these songs offered here to support the campaign to FREE CHELSEA MANNING.

Partial proceeds of the sales of this cassette will support the Chelsea Manning Support Network (chelseamanning.org), and will be earmarked for the defence of Army Pvt. Chelsea (formerly Bradley) Manning. Former Private Manning was sentenced to thirty years in military prison for sharing the video of a US helicopter attack that killed a dozen Iraqis, exposing US State Dept. cables, the "Iraq War Logs", and the "Afghan War Diaries" with the WikiLeaks website.

After the release of ‘The Mound’ / ‘Disappear’ in March, Girls In Synthesis
follow up the white-noise bludgeon of their debut single with the ‘Suburban
Hell E.P’; a 4 track exposition into the group’s sonic arsenal.
From the breathless, spitting attack on small-town bigotry of the title track
to the woozy waltz-time, dual-vocal paranoia that is ‘Fucked’, the E.P
regularly shifts pace and sonic boundaries without losing any of the
intensity the band are acclaimed for.
Produced and recorded by the band at their s.i.c.k studio in South
London, the project pushed creativity to a high and a decision was made
to include an experimental, electronic dub remix version of the E.P as a
free download to work as a companion and as a nod to the bands punk
and post-punk influences.

Being the first physical release, the same amount of care and attention
has gone into the presentation and packaging of the 7”; the limited edition
7” comes on white label, black vinyl with a hand-stamped GiS logo on the
a-side. The sleeve is a unique hand-numbered A3, black and white
fold-out poster printed on 120gsm recycled stock.

Tim Garratt (Moon Zero) has an ongoing relationship with Blank Editions, his name appearing on a whole mess of our catalogue entries through the numerous records he has performed and engineered for us since the labels inception.

Matthew Heywood (Bruised Skies) came to our attention through Tim and we released Bruised Skies debut physical album, 'Guide' in 2015 as part of The Blank Tapes Series.

The self-titled debut album portrays a powerfully mournful, but beautifully stark work. The soundtrack to walking through a storm of ash, only to realise that the city is on fire and viewing this incredible spectacle from afar. It is a dark, yet somehow hopeful record and a focussed collaboration that expands upon their ambient solo work.

Although named after a small industrial town in Scotland, the record grounds itself to our hometown of Hackney. The 3-part 'Ridley Road', with its waves of distorted bass, metallic synths and detuned vocals could be heard as a tone poem for the rapid gentrification that threatens to engulf the historic market street, before authentic field recordings remind us of what we stand to lose.

We are so pleased to be releasing this work by two of our good friends who continue to illustrate the community we are blessed to work within.

James wrote and performed almost all of the instrumentation on ​Id-Dar Tal-Missier himself, recording largely at home on his own setup, creating finished pieces layer by layer. Though the main body of composition is based on guitar and voice, Vella's list of instruments performed also includes banjo, cello, organ, xylophone, an ancient Chinese harp named guzheng, and drumkit, amounting to subtle and intelligent 
arrangements, heavenly textures and a more song-based approach to the work he is best known for. Present here are verses and choruses, as if pop music, but also hazy, dreamy journeys through nocturnal sparseness and strangeness.

A few contributions from Vella's friends also grace the record: ​Mercury Prize Nominee C Duncan lends lush choral vocals to ‘Banana Moth’ and (​yndi halda ​co-founder) Daniel Neal performs violin across several pieces. 
Often inspired by non-musical forms, Vella writes that ​Id-Dar Tal-Missier was instead created under the influence of sensory experiences. He lists filmmakers Werner Herzog and Apichatpong Weerasuthakul; the TV show Stranger Things; his dog Sully; the ("painstaking") process of writing his first novel; books by Cormac McCarthy, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, John Cheever and Carson McCullers; travels around India, South America and the Middle East.

As a live act, ​A Lily has shared the stage with ​Amiina​, ​Peter Broderick​, ​Silver Apples​, yndi halda​, ​ISAN​, and plenty of others.

The artwork for ​Id-Dar Tal-Missier - both cover and extended - is based on photographs by James' father Mark. These photos were taken in Myanmar in early 2018; here they reference the openness and immediacy of everything...

...And of course it’s a gentle reference to the Father of the record’s title too.

Magic & Machines was recorded in one long, quiet take, late at night in a mill in Sudbury. 32 minutes of ghostly library-like music, it’s a movieless soundtrack to their own aimless and intuitive finger wanderings, an indulgent lullaby about the kind of mysterious play that happens between you and your instrument, summed up in the single vocal reprise ‘strange feedback between magic and machines’.

Since forming in 2015, Vanishing Twin have always blended pop songs and improvised otherness. This cassette is a window into the latter – into a practice of deep listening and telepathic reciprocation that they’re continually trying to develop.

Released on Friday 9th November, ( Pre orders open now ) and following up their E.P releases “Suburban Hell” and “We Might Not Make Tomorrow”, Girls In Synthesis once again join forces with us to release the “Fan The Flames” E.P. Building on the subtleties apparent on their previous releases, it can be said that “Fan The Flames” is the most varied and experimental of the trio of E.Ps. 

Amongst the piercing guitars, pounding drums and harsh, spitting vocals, the E.P finds time to include improvised, spoken word poetry and groove-based sparseness on “Howling” and “Internal Politics”, respectively. The title track lyrically looks at the dichotomy of moral and political beliefs while “You’re Doing Fine” deals with self-doubt and anxiety, backed by a rapid and edgy musical backing to match.

Released once again in their now familiar fold-out sleeve, the vinyl edition is typically a labour of love; 125 copies only, all hand-stamped and numbered which come in the aforementioned sleeve featuring lyrics and a reproduction of the forthcoming “Fan The Flames” tour poster and an exclusive 4 badge set.

This release sees the group hand mixing duties over to James Aparicio (Liars, Nick Cave, Factory Floor) who joins the fold of their handful of close collaborators, alongside photographer Bea Dewhurst, sound designer Max Walker and Blank Edition’s David S.Blanco, whilst a forthcoming video sees a second collaboration with new video team Soft Surface.

With the tour warm up show selling out in 1 day, forthcoming dates include sold out dates with with Fat White Family side-project Warmduscher and with Pigs x 7. Their longest tour to date, the dates will see the band take their new set on the road and unleash their uncompromising stage show across the country.

London experimental five-piece return for more anarchic genre-blending adventures. 

London experimental five-piece Housewives return for more anarchic genre-blending adventures with their new single 'Speak To Me'; A synthesized collage written in Wetherspoons, cafes and anywhere away from their houseboats where they could find an electrical supply. 

Exploring the possibilities of electronic sound, with dead-behind-the-eyes chanting, this latest snippet of things to come marks a turning point for the band who sold their guitars to buy midi equipment and swapped London rents for houseboat living. 

Using huge live drums, saccharine vocal samples, pulsating sub bass and mechanically entwined guitar lines; 'Speak to Me' is a sign of the bands’ new direction with a constantly evolving sound, creating an anxiety and tightness that assumes the feeling of a knot in the stomach, or a strained smile. 

The band describe it as 'a love song of frustration and sensitivity through the eyes of a victim of the isolation of modern life. Quiet but not shy, voiceless, seething, dumb and in love'. 

In the video, created by the band and our in-house art department, we're transported into a manifestation of the inescapable digital experience of our everyday lives and its effect on our psyche. The thin layer of perceptible reality is constantly disrupted via the breaking of the digital facade.

Housewives - Speak To Me

Second single taken from Twilight Splendour.

Housewives latest single 'SmttnKttns' follows on from where November's album teaser 'Speak to Me' took off, drenching the palette in huge waves of triangular beats, saccharine vocal samples, pulsating sub bass and Ben Vince's desert sax.

In the video, made in-house, we find Housewives bathed in the HD surroundings of our new digital age. Images now more familiar than our natural landscape; blissful scrolling on smart phones, aspirational family time, representations of love and ecstatic VR computer playing all presented in anodyne advert quality soft focus under the watchful eye of drones.

Formed last year by two French exiles who met in London, the duo bloomed out of the concrete to deliver a gloomy — yet danceable — strain of post-punk crafted from pounding electronic beats, detuned synths and icy guitars.

Their self-titled debut EP was born with a definite DIY attitude, from the construction of a home-made recording studio in an East-London warehouse (that got demolished for luxury apartments to be built before the album was even completed) to the directing of the video for “Your Life” (a dystopian song about how Internet spying has turned us into a stalking society).

Walking a tightrope between resignation and flickers of life, the end result is a 6-track EP portraying a sick and sad world, where all characters wander aimlessly through the night looking for a place they'll never find.
