PSEUDUB004- Plebeian - Holistic / Paradiso [PREVIEWS]

Following this year’s VA ‘Marmo’, a collaborative offering co-released with XCPT, Baroque Sunburst releases its first Various Artists EP. Tracks from Taro, Pugilist, Slacker and Flørist, creates a statement record championing subtle yet hybrid club-oriented sounds. 

Taro ignites the white label 12" with ‘Gas Burn’, a dreamy, rarified IDM zipper. An off-kilter UK funky remix from Flørist follows (his second appearance on the imprint after 2020's Intermedia 1 EP). The B side drags us into a half-time, downtempo sideroom, with tracks from Slacker (Aqueduct) and Pugilist (Symbiosis) slowing pace but maintaining intensity.

'Noone St. Encounter' and all associated works were created, produced and compiled on unceded Aboriginal land. General Merchant acknowledges that it operates on stolen land, belonging to the Gadigal and Wangal people of the Eora Nation, and we pay our respects to Aboriginal elders past, present and emerging.

Joshua Evans is a Naarm based producer with his debut release titled ‘Noone St. Encounter’ under the moniker ‘RXEX’. This EP will mark General Merchant’s seventh release (previous
releases can be heard on Bandcamp). General Merchant is an Eora-based record label, hosting events and releasing music that contribute to (so-called) “Australia’s” underground music and dance scene. GM experiments with immersive rave events that rely on site-specific set design, creating a cohesive vision centred around collective effervescence, and is enhanced by the sound and artwork that GM exports. Upcoming events and releases can be tracked via their Website, Instagram and SoundCloud.

Sonically, ‘Noone St. Encounter’ depicts ex-terrestrial-isms that stem from an obsession with other worldly life forms. RXEX utilizes modular synthesis to create atmospheres that are both biologically familiar and alien to the human ear. Probing beyond the outer orbits of the sound-solar system, RXEX incorporates psy-fi fantasy bass- abductionism to create a unique and varied sound that is informed by a distinctive modular synthesis. The release features a dynamic remix by Naarm based Homelander that commands

For his latest offering, Millia [@milliamusic] readies two rich organic and dub-influenced tracks for Local Knowledge. 

‘ACAB Break’ combines psychedelic samples with tripped out breaks, deep subs, and dense, spacey atmospheres. On the flip, ‘Trip Dub’ delves further into dubwise territory, delivering a tense percussive affair of cavernous soundscapes and weighty drums that stretch effortlessly across the B-side.

The record comes with a 70 x 48cm Offset printed poster, printed inserts, stickers + special treats.

Dublin DJ/producer Sputnik One shares the second offering from his recently launched label N-Face - the follow up to 2022’s debut release Supa Natural/Grafters ft. Belfast-based rapper EMBY which was supported by Ben UFO, CCL, DJ Voices and more.

The club-destroying compilation spans 10 tracks, featuring bubbling bass and glitchy breaks through cheeky wafters to fresh and exciting techno and dancefloor mutations from a total of 11 artists and groups from three continents. Rising talents Dual Monitor, Glimmerman, LWS & No Sir join label head Sputnik One & K-Wata, as well as fresh faces St. Amp, Outl1er, DJ Gerard, Puncta and Young Muscle. N-Face 002 V/A showcases the Dublin artist’s strong vision and A&R hand and celebrates some of the most talented underground heads about. Staying in line with the spirit of collaboration set out in N-Face 001, Sputnik One teams up with K-Wata for their contribution to the compilation, with ‘Back Innit’ a chugging drama infused percussive roller.

The artwork, designed by Harvey Wise gathers historical objects from disparate corners of the world, using the ‘Hook / Crook’ monogram to tie everything together thematically. Hot on the heels of the labels’ first release N-Face invites a dynamic group of artists to explore the vast spectrum of percussive electronics in forward facing dance music.

Bringing together artists from different corners of the genre spectrum for one-off releases and unexpected collaborations, N-Face focuses on pairing cutting-edge sonics with equally specific visual direction, working with a new artist for each subsequent release's design.

SUZI returns after the beautiful EP by Downstairs J with a new power compilation, including contributions by Beta Librae, Flørist, Dashiell, and Alfredo 92. This VA record explores modern takes on tech dimensions driven by catchy grooves.
 
The record debuts with an essential dancefloor killer by Dashiell, a talented musician based in Naarm/Melbourne. "Beep Beep" has a slick badass attitude driven by its frenetic core melody, accompanied by a spooky cosmic atmosphere, and makes this track an instant hit for dancefloors.
 
The second contribution, "Listening to the ants," comes from Beta Librae, one of NYC's most unique exports in recent years. Her signature contemporary deep-bleep-groovy sound can also be found in this composition, which has a slow and dubby feel filled with small insect-like details. A perfect symbiosis between organic and digital worlds.
 
On the flip side, we find "Dot Matrix," a groover by Berlin-based Flørist. Breaky tech-house with MPC-like swingy shakers channeling a balance between minimalistic details and slightly scratchy sound design. The bass-line, one of the key elements here, comes and goes over and over again, creating superb tension from beginning to end.
 
The final track "Bora" of the record comes from Copenhagen, by Alfredo 92. What makes this track so special is its propulsive drive without any kick drum in it. The association of wind-like groove elements combined with a subtle melody makes this beautifully crafted sonic tempest.
