Bside Incoming: Tiptoes

The re-upload marks the 14th Bside brought to you since the start of Scottish quarantine, and provides another chance to find some fresh music as we take a journey through the record bag of Glasgow based producer and crate-digger TIPTOES. The whole episode is infused with the kind of deep rhythms, moody chord progressions, and jazzy interludes that you can be sure to expect from his productions:
Tiptoes popped up on our radar with his recent EP Rhythms & Solos, released on Nómada Records : The record label and jazzy collective featuring one of Bside’s favourite artists, Felipe Gordon. Safe to say we have a lot of time for his punchy remix of Tiptoes jazzy title track. (https://soundcloud.com/…/tiptoes-rhythms-solos-felipe-gordon).

But he’s long been a proponent of deep house grooves; his 2011 debut album (under his name Dominic Martin) ‘Family Affair’ on the highly respected LostMyDog record label thrust him onto the scene with some of his tracks being graced by the decks of Kerri Chandler, Milton Jackson, Eats Everything, Mosca, DJ Spinna, Mark Farina, DJ Sneak, and Maya Jane Coles. And in recent years he has also been pumping out some serious heaters under his current alias on Guesthouse USA, notably ’Steppin’ which has featured on an essential mix (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leaGfBUzX4w).

This Episode’s got it all; much loved classics from Soichi Terada and Kerri Chandler, hidden gems like ex-terrestrial’s downtempo electro, some wax magic with a Mr.G record at the ‘wrong speed’, a dose of rare salsa, and plenty of funk!

Hailing from Leeds in the UK Nick J. Smith has been immersed in the city’s underground scene for the past 20 years. DJing across the uk and hosting diverse parties back in Leeds as Clandestino. Consequently playing to vibing dance floors in Europe, such as Renate in Berlin, Powerhouse in Moscow and heady festivals in Croatia.

Nick’s sound takes inspiration from the golden era of Italian Dream House circa 89-92. This is no restriction on his constant search for new music and music production, more of an ethos to work from. Melody is the key. Check his recent EP outing on Clandestino’s own label via ‘You Make Me Feel’. A clear representation of his style, 2020 house music with a firm nod to the emotive sounds of the past.
Nick also has an ongoing monthly DJ mix series named ‘Chance to Dance’ which is gathering pace and attention. Delving into the depths of his musical love affair and inspirations. Showcasing his passion and talent for creating a musical journey.

The Balamii and Netil Radio resident has been keeping herself busy this year with livestreams for the Vinyl Factory and even a few Covid gigs. The eclectic selector also helps run London female collective Rhythm Sister, a platform created to support and promote women, non binary and LGBTQ selectors and artists.
