Over the last five years, ARC has become an essential meeting point for electronic music’s most influential figures, emerging stars, and underground trailblazers, set against the backdrop of Chicago, the birthplace of house music.

There's something rebellious about playing records completely improvised. Like buying a lucky bag of sweets from the ice cream van and finding a prize inside it, every unheard B side in your record collection knows this only too well. 

Nowadays, you can buy a set of Pioneer CDJ's for £7000 from Amazon and be 'sync button' mixing within hours. It's all the rage afterall.

We on the other hand spend £7000+ a year searching for vinyl and in support of new underground artists. 

Sometimes when we play our records, we discover a phenomenon known by very few - the hidden 3rd track - an act of when 2 different records become one and resultantly the " 3rd Hidden Track " is revealed.

What a joy it will be if you find your own personal feeling of this.

Records are living things, surface noise and all. They bang better. They want to live.

The German legend talks about the state of modern trance, what it takes to create a legacy and writing his most recent album.

Poll the average dance music fan and they'll have almost certainly heard of Paul van Dyk. The German DJ and producer is so synonymous with trance that it's impossible to talk about the genre's history without mentioning his name. He's also been one of the most successful electronic artists full-stop since the '90s, when he first started touring around Berlin. His 1994 hit "For an Angel" launched him into the limelight, and he's been selling out clubs and arenas ever since.

In this RA Exchange recorded at the Berlin Synth Museum, he reflected on the current state of trance and how its modern DJs are missing the mark; his lifelong engagement with politics and his efforts to enlist Americans to vote alongside Bono; his experience growing up in East Berlin; and a life-threatening accident he suffered at a festival in Utrecht, which left him with multiple spine and brain injuries. He said the experience taught him to cherish every part of life, and that love is the greatest and most healing power that exists.

Van Dyk's most recent album is called This World is Ours, and in this conversation he unpacks the accompanying tour and some of the key themes that run through the tracks—namely, the rise of AI and our need to unite in the face of a non-human ruling elite. DJing in his hometown of Belfast for close to 30 years, Blark AKA Blacky.  Seeing Carl Cox play at the legendary Vengeance raves in 1990s was where he first got bitten by the rave bug and hasn't looked back since. Some people say he’s actually been to more raves than Carl Cox has ;)

Alongside friend and fellow Cricky, they both started up the Cave nights in Belfast, bringing over acts like Pet Duo, Patrick DSP, Marco Bailey, Dan Ghenacia, Mark EG, James Ruskin to the city. It was through this the two started releasing music as Cave DJz, racking up almost 15 tracks to date. 

In more recent times, Blark has warmed up for some of the biggest names in techno and house played at festivals like Burning Man, Jika Jika, Life Festival, ifyouknow and AVA in Belfast. He’s also played in clubs all over Europe, including a lengthy stay in Ibiza, Griessmuehle in Berlin and Corsica Studios in London.
