In the classical margam of bharatanatyam, the varnam is the recital’s centerpiece, its longest and most emotionally charged performance. In “Tome of Stars“, the varnam appears as the twenty-nine-poem section “Senescence”. Following the exaltation of Anthesis, the beloved as a celestial goddess, love now descends from the stars into the gravity of human frailty. 

This sonnet is the rendering of a deeply destructive personal state in verse, the long-term impact of the combination of abandonment amplified by the most emotionally annihilating message the poet received from his beloved: a short, blunt line in a text message, “ur a lost person,” a phrase which continues to haunt him.

The poem does not resist her terrible judgment, but rather absorbs it and gives voice to the despair, self-loathing, and catastrophic collapse of identity it triggered. Moving through a sequence of accusatory and confessional expressions, the sonnet portrays a psyche spiraling in the gravitational pull of shame and emotional death. The stylistic register sought is stark, compressed, and unrelenting, echoing the raw immediacy of trauma. In its final line, the poem gives way to dark ideation—not from romantic heartbreak alone, but from the deeper confirmation it delivered to lifelong feelings worthlessness, malignancy, and irredeemability. This is not a love poem in mourning; it is a scream from the wreckage of self.

I’m lost—a person lost—you spat at me,
And you were right, for I’m condemned, depraved;
And now I see your love had ceased to be.
We drifted cold in space, momentum’s slave.

I am a lost psychotic—naked heart,
Long-mangled, twisted spawn of demon’s seed,
Filth-ruined, ghastly, shattered shard apart.
Depart from me—run, each of you, I plead.

My life—a waste, parade of panicked flights,
Avoiding monsters’ drooling, blood-soaked jaws;
Mistakes from dungeon’s chains and trauma’s blights—
It’s empty to me now, a fruitless cause.

Far better if I’d never drawn a breath:
I’m lost in losing you and yearn for death.
