"I recorded this mix on my latest Berlin trip while I was on tour. I wanted this mix to reflect on themes of longing, loss, love, and desire. I’ve recently undergone a lot of personal changes in my life, from relationships and friendships evolving to traveling quite a lot and being away from home. It’s kind of meant to be a hybrid of a playlist/mix I suppose. For me, these songs evoke a certain nostalgia, sadness, and catharsis. But hopefully some hope and joy as well. Lots of vocals and classics like Madonna, as well as some other better-known tracks. I wanted it to be a nice listening experience that's thematic more so than anything else. Could be nice to listen to while you’re at home, out for a drive, cleaning, or just want something non-abrasive to listen to."

Bio: Adrenaline-spiked video games have soundtracked the youth
of millions global-wide for decades. Immersive worlds
elevated by pulsing scores have long gripped imaginations,
and Chicago techno producer, DJ and video game developer
Zvrra is an artist whose dynamic craft can be credited to the
console. It was Rockstar’s street racing game Midnight Club II
that kick-started Zvrra’s love of techno’s sundry rhythms as the
soundtrack featured a strong supply of cuts from esteemed
producers.

Galvanized by her gameplay, she quickly began
experimenting with her own sound. That was nearly two
decades ago and Zvrra’s output has explored a multitude of
genres and styles ranging from techno and house, to hip hop,
dark ambient, tribal and industrial, with her being a deft hand
in blending styles and crafting concept albums.

Since 2020, Zvrra has been breaking through the ranks and
rising to prominence. Records such as her self-released Flow
State techno EP bagged her high praise in all the right corners
with Luke Slater, Umfang, Inigo Kennedy, Dustin Zahn and
Ben Sims being among those to support her works. British
techno linchpin Shifted is another who took notice, saving her
a sought-after slot on his imprint Avian for her debut LP
Bizzaroland. Released at the end of 2021, the absorbing,
tension-driving nine-tracker spans ambient, techno and noise,
and firmly secures Zvrra’s reputation as an artist in a world of
her own in concocting distinct, intricate soundscapes. Beyond
self-releases and record label dispatches, her music features
on HBO Max’s South Side series as well as a TV commercial for
the streaming giant.

As for DJing, Zvrra’s shrewd selections have largely been heard
across the airwaves with regular guest slots on Rinse FM and
The Lot, as well as being tapped by Dekmantel for its
crowd-pulling podcast series. And as her productions
continue to thud across dancefloors, she’s eager to clock in
behind the booths of hallowed clubs and festivals worldwide.

While music production has taken precedence over video
game development, in the near future fans of her sonic ammo
will be able to explore her three-dimensional creations as
she’s developing games with plans to release them on Steam,
Xbox and other major platforms.

"Pablo’s set was the best thing I’ve heard in a while. Didn’t know him before, had no idea what to expect. What we got was a proper tour de force of different genres, tempos, structures and, yes, storytelling (it’s a thing). Slick ghetto house, crazy footwork, UKG, certified bangers (*could have been one, could have been two, could have been three*) - you name it, he served it.

But what really set the set apart (you see what I did there) were the fresh ideas how to put all that shit together – like when he casually mixed an endless loop of that pre-drop swarm-of-bees part  from Joy O’s “flight fm” into his own track. I even had to go and check the players if it was some edit, but nope, mixed right there on the spot. That's how he achieved that mysterious “you get them where you want” state. He created the vibe and eased the crowd into it, which then got super receptive to his experiments as evidenced by all the oohs and aaahs and hurrahs (I might have provided some). That last part also made me realize that Pablo must be the sweetest guy ever – you could see how genuinely thankful and happy he was for all the positive feedback. Top shit, all around."

The Medellín maverick opens RA.997 with another mind-altering home run.

As part of our countdown to the 1000th edition of the RA Podcast, a milestone in the 18-year history of Resident Advisor's weekly mix series, we're switching up the usual format.

This week, following heady excursions through Lagos, Kampala, Detroit and Chicago, our focus shifts to Latin America—arguably the story in underground electronic music since the pandemic.

After years of being all but overlooked internationally, the explosion of distinctive club sounds emerging from Peru, Brazil, Colombia and beyond has finally begun to get its due.

Among the movement's great success stories are two artists who exemplify its refreshingly undogmatic energy: Verraco and Bitter Babe, and the former handles the A-side of RA.997. 

Is there a more compelling electronic artist around right now? Both in the studio and behind the decks, the Medellín-based DJ and producer currently sits in that coveted creative sweet spot, where every fresh musical morsel feels like a moment. To bask in any of his singular tracks on VOAM, Timedance and now XL Recordings, is to be bowled over by their rhythmic brilliance, madcap hooks and whirlpool basslines. ("Basic Maneuvers," anyone?)

His mix is tough to pin down—a blend of dubby techno, tribal atmospheres, slanted bass and sharp edits. Or, as he puts it in the accompanying interview: “an intersection between dub-infused techno but with some flow, reduced atmospheric tribal, edgy bass cuts, mental emo-tek.”

There’s plenty of unreleased TraTraTrax material here, alongside tracks from artists like Virginia, A Made Up Sound and a euphoric flip of Ploy’s “Ramos.” Slippery, emotional and surgically precise, it’s Verraco doing what he does best.
