Set the Mood with Lenz!

I’m excited to introduce Lenz, who made a opening set as the 45th guest in the Set the Mood series. As a DJ and co-founder of the collective De After, he’s created a platform to express his vision of the underground. His passion for techno was born on the dancefloors of illegal raves, a love that naturally pulled him from the crowd into the booth. Musically, Lenz stands apart from current techno trends. He roots for hypnotic patterns, shadowy atmospheres, and relentless, percussive drive. His sound is rooted in the heavier side of early-2000s techno, and his signature style is layered, pounding, and immersive. This has made him a staple across the Netherlands, with appearances at clubs like Paradiso, Club Atelier, and Club Basis. This mix is a deep dive into that world, only as a opening set.

For Lenz, the perfect opening set walks a delicate line between dark, ambient textures and driving percussion. His aim is to draw listeners into a dreamy, almost trance-like state while still making them want to move. That’s when they hit "flow." It’s not about overwhelming energy from the start, but about a subtle progression that invites the crowd to surrender to the music. The goal? To make people dance, crave more, and still have enough fuel to last the entire night. With that in mind, he challenged himself to begin this mix as slowly and intentionally as possible, settling into a steady 130 BPM groove from the start.

Metapattern is also an Ableton certified professor, author of two books, "Secrets Of Techno," and a professional educator for nearly two decades.

We're also thrilled to share  that Metapattern has just released their second album, "Lost Tapes," on the MORD label.

This episode continues VARIA's mission: championing considered electronic expression and lasting artistry.
