As a DJ and curator, Alexandr is characterized by her impeccable selections. Constantly at the forefront of what's current, she's a relentless digger of fresh music. At the decks, she's an exciting DJ capable of building stories through vibes and across genres. OMOH (@omohbp) and Persephone (@persephoneparty) are two of the projects Alexandr has been involved in sharing her forward thinking vision. By chance, but not by accident, she's become a key driving force behind Budapest's underground music scene and queer movement, and in rebuilding the seemingly lost bond between the two.

About the mix: "It is the end of this weird year and it looks like the next one won't start good either. My mix was inspired by 3 things; living in the shadow of new lockdown bans of the nightlife in the city I like to be; the melancholy of the post-rave comedowns; the concept of hauntology. The latter is partly about the theory that rave is dead and it only exists as a ghost, which is haunting since the 90s in the way how today's electronic music is created. It also means the uncanny nostalgic feeling about what we once had. In the past, "everything was better".

The tracks in the mix represent the melancholy of the end of the year, surreal times, inspired by Berlin where we just got used to clubbing and dancing again, with the new covid virus variant and due to peaking numbers the government is striking on the club culture - a no solution, an easy target, they have announced the ridiculous tanzverboten as one the solutions.

Raving is the escapism of our times as a collective, utopic, transcendent euphoria, where we, the chemical generation can share love and togetherness. Since the things are not going back to the life we had before and the future seems lost and uncertain, but we will always need a utopian dream world to unite us. I hope this mix will help the listener to remember the memories of what does mean and feels to being a raver, even if it is rather listening to a mix than on being on the dancefloor."

BLEAK057 - Silent Rave by Alexandr

Born in Germany with French origin, @mariemontexier's preferred format as a DJ is vinyl, a crucial part of why she began DJing and collecting music. 

Curious about genres and styles, multi-eclectic influences informs her sound. Her sets, mainly based on breakbeat and big on UK flavour, are global melting pots where genres and edges blur; oldskool acid, tribal-scented beats and trippy techno merge here. Marie brings a twisted quirkiness, lightening up a sometimes harsh-sounding corner of the scene.

Although new in the industry, Marie Montexier’s hard work has not gone by unnoticed: during her debut year of 2019, she was selected “Newcomer of the Year” by German music institution Groove Magazin, an honor for any artist. Since then, Marie went on to play venues across Europe, including the likes of Berghain and Fabric, and currently holds a residency at internationally renowned party Warning, taking place in Berlin.

"This only vinyl mix is a club mix from summer 2021, a time when we had the chance to experience club culture together again. Usually I’m more into breaks, bass and techno but here I bring a lot of power house and acid into the mix. And don't be too sad, winter is here but summer will come again and we will be able to dance together again. Until then, enjoy the time with the music at home. - x"

We are thrilled to present our 97th installment of our Truancy Volume series from Pariah himself. Where the not long past Karenn and Works The Late Nights releases are centred around music that is meant to be elevated by the club atmosphere, Pariah’s Truancy Volume digs further into the origins of where this emphasis stems from. This mixtape is a solid representation of Pariah’s sonic ethos and the mix itself features the inclusion of records like the definitive Oni Ayhun track “OAR002-A,” Sven Vath and a more current Trilogy Tapes release in its introduction, that all focus on the spacious and warmer side of techno. On the other hand, it later showcases a more merciless and weighty side alike in atmosphere to recent productions of his own, such as Power Vacuum and SCKT. Truancy Volume 97 is a welcome addition to our series and a rightful interpretation of the musical tastes and various influences from the producer cum DJ.

Truancy Volume 97: Pariah

It's impossible to talk about the sound of DjRUM without using the word cinematic. Whatever he does, it has a feeling of grand importance, widescreen elegance and moving emotion that elevates it way above a dance floor soundtrack. Throughout the course of his career, the UK artist has drawn on downtempo, blurred the lines between drum & bass and dubstep and always imbued his music with spoken words snippets, piano and chamber instruments. His Portrait With Firewood album was a real high-water mark in 2018, and last year his latest outing on R&S once again managed to draw on every aspect of electronic music and come up with something all his own. 

His mix for us this week is a perfect ethereal rave that finds plenty of beauty in the sparse rhythms he draws on from the worlds of garage, techno and drum & bass. There is a delicacy and elegance throughout, even when the beats hit hard and fast as they do at the overdriven and manic mid point. The amen breaks come thick and fast after that, but eventually melt away to propulsive ambient soundscapes that suspend you in time and space. Blissful.
