Disciples alumni 99LETTERS celebrates his new album Zigoku [地獄] on Phantom Limb with a Bleep mix of underworldly selections. Though Zigoku [地獄] directly translates as 'Hell', the Osaka-based producer's mix is less the Nine Circles of Dante's Inferno but more of an ambient distillation of the fiery environs of his own full length. Burnt away by corrosives, the layers of his selection leave us endless illuminating plains to wander laid down by fellow guides KMRU, Coby Sey, Actress, the late great Ryuichi Sakamoto and 99LETTERS himself of course, in particular on his own beautifully longing cut, Owaranai Osaka (未終大阪).

Ruminating on this mortal coil, 99LETTERS explains:

"I had a story in mind before creating this mix. It all started with the album "Kaibou Zukan/解剖図鑑" released on Disciples. The scenery and images that we see in our lives are just like the photos that appear when we press the shutter of a camera, and music is the story that mysteriously appears in our minds when we listen to a song. Everyone can feel this phenomenon. Life is not only fun, but it can also be painful and sad. In the mix for Bleep, I expressed these crossroads in life in my own way, and combined songs by artists I respect. For me, it's similar to the feeling you get when you're on a train or driving in a car. "It's mostly recent stuff I wish I would hear everytime I go to clubs including some stuff from the EP.” Tracks like ‘Break Bandits’ and GRRL’s ‘Ultra Heaven’ tread the line between driving hardcore energy for the dancefloor and more slippery, stuttering experimentalism, emphasised in georg-i’s ‘Strobe Fodder’ with hypertactile synth plucks cutting through incendiary stomps. Elsewhere, we find tenderly textured, euphoric two step from PISTASHIO, and cinematically styled breakcore on HudMo & Nikki Nair’s ‘Generator’ with white rapid slashing breaks and epic piano chords.

Leading up to his debut Tresor release Backward Improvement, @ufo95ufo95 has prepared a mix of ultra forward motion and cavernous four to the floor thumps. Starting with tense dissonant chords and sparse hits reverberating in a sci-fi atmosphere, the mix launches us into an hour of hefty techno shuffles, and rebounding rhythms and rumbles. Alongside the unreleased cuts are select tracks from the Sandwell District crew, like ‘Hunting Lodge’ with icy grains flowing between synth stabs while heaving kicks pulsate and implode. “I made this mix on Ableton and added some 909 jams. The major part of the mix contains my unreleased tracks mixed with techno classics from Sandwell District, Silent Servant, Shifted & more. I went through deep, hypnotic, dub and club oriented techno during these 60 minutes.”

Coming off the back of performing on and producing tracks for James Blake’s new album Playing Robots Into Heaven, @Airhead is back with his first proper release since 2018 returning to Untold's Hemlock imprint. A more than welcome return, Lightness is Rob McAndrew's atmospheric and crisp take on drum & bass, celebrated by a selection for Bleep, “a mix of some beautiful music at 170bpm”. It features an array of adjacent productions and inspirations kicking off with masters of the form, Sam KDC and ASC setting the tone perfectly for the following hour of oneiric breaks.

Fresh from releasing his debut album Endless Path of Memory, sound artist and experimental musician Nexcyia sends a mix for Bleep that is equally mystical and varied. Spiralling piano keys flurry into rich, lush folk and classical arrangement, then the serenity breaks for whirring, portal jumping electronics. Shoegazing walls of strums, blurred vocals, and soft acoustic lullabies rub against abstract percussive clusters and eruptions of stream, with ethereal sonics bursting into murky club rhythms. 

"I recorded this mix at home on Ableton, it's the stuff I listen to on a daily basis. There are a lot of collaborations here that I admire. Some new music here by Kevin, a duo comprised of Ben Bondy and Mister Water Wet and unreleased music by NUG, a music project by Florian T M Zeisig and PVAS. The Warp Records Bleep × takeover marked the last event at our pop-up shop in Dalston. Mira Calix, Plaid and Special Request all delivered sets that were energetic, playful and ultimately; incredibly fun. This mix from Plaid starts from the off at 100% and stays there till the end. From the first kickdrum to the final squelch, this is a constant roller bursting with heart palpitating energy.  60 minutes of pure vibrancy with a breakbeat or two thrown in for good measure - fitting for a final big blow out!

No frills or faff about this set, just banger after glorious banger from Warp kingpins.

PLZ Make It Ruins boss Vegyn has just released his debut LP after a run of singles on his own label, as well as working with the likes of Frank Ocean and Travis Scott. Here we see him pull some of his favourite tracks and go-to selections when playing live.

Vril spoils us on his Bleep mix. All of the tracks delivered by the German producer here are either Vril originals or remixed by him, and almost all of this material is unreleased at the time of writing. A generous offering indeed, but what’s more impressive still is how Vril knits together these broken-beat techno joints into a cinematic whole, one which maintains a propulsive forward thrust even as it explores dub-techno scientifics, dystopian synthscapes and the keys-led quirkiness of late-90s IDM. The fact that Vril bookends the mix with passages of weightless, widescreen ambience emphasises the evocative qualities of his music still further.

It’s an apt name for multimedia artist Max Cooper’s electronic imprint, where the MO is clattering rhythms and voluminous ambient vistas; sound as a vehicle for big ideas. Cooper’s exclusive Bleep mix celebrates the achievements of Mesh with a collection of works from their discography, featuring the ambient swells of Rob Clouth and some especially crisp breakbeat re-alignments from the likes of Reid Willis and Synkro. To top it off, there’s a couple of unreleased Cooper numbers you won’t hear anywhere else.
