I like pop music. I always thought “Paranoid” by Kanye West was a perfect blend of pop and hip hop. I also love words like “sharp” that have multiple uses/meanings. My favorite band, The Strokes, said the same thing about their name.

There was a brief trend on Twitter where people noted how DEI was being used almost as a replacement for the n-word from people on the right, so Black people started making jokes about it. I just always thought it was funny and great reflection of how Black people can always roll with the punches and flip things on their face. D-E-Icon just came to me as a funny screen name idea, and the song kind of wrote itself.

My best attempt at Hip Hop + Pop + and Punk. I’ve always wanted to make music that sounds like OutKast with a punk band. Leftists need more jams, more songs that somehow feel bouncy and joyful. Politics is a worthy fight but we also need to experience life in a good way too, together. I also wrote this after a Mannequin Pussy concert and really wanted to go for that same high, angry energy with the vocals.
