Composer Lea Bertucci's collaborative works and solos for saxophone and bass clarinet are often layered and processed through unusual methods, including archaic tape recorders and multichannel configurations. Fascinated by acoustic phenomenon, Bertucci is as likely to perform in a club as in a cave or handball court. Solo and ensemble works are explored in this program, with comments from the artist on technique, technology, and adventurism. Bertucci’s 2022 album, Murmurations, is on Bandcamp.

Topology Of An Inner City - from Instruments of the State by Tse Tse Fly Middle East

A collaborative release with the visual artist Shannon Ebner, STRAY: A GRAPHIC TONE features the poems of Susan Howe and Nathaniel Mackey. Produced and collated by Ebner, STRAY: A GRAPHIC TONE juxtaposes historic and recent material from Howe and Mackey between 1991 – 2018. The work brought together specifically examines the two writers’ lifelong preoccupation with subjects adrift in dispossessed narratives both real and imagined.

According to Ebner, “STRAY: A GRAPHIC TONE is the full-length version of what I started in 2016 when I began seeking exchanges with these two poets. I was drawn to their works for their experiments with poetic form – for their politics of poetic form, to be exact – for their poems’ stray figures and stray errant marks.”

In this talk, Trinh T. Minh-ha focuses on “Voice” as an activity by which the text’s social, ethical, and aesthetic positioning is conveyed to the reader/viewer. It draws on Trinh’s last book, Lovecidal. Walking with the Disappeared (2016), to explore the intervals between saying and seeing, speaking and hearing, or between language, image, sense, and sound.

"Words, turning strange, taking room, as if heard for the first time…each word is a hyperword—a multiplicity whose field of interfertile references spreads, implodes or dwindles over time, hybridizing and bypassing its own rules of survival. Old resonances fade and empty out. The transient, the ephemeral, the fragmentary and all that threaten to disappear are the very forms and forces that drive writing as manifesting….Telling inflects what is being told" (quoted from Lovecidal).

This is the third event in our year-long season dedicated to the questions posed by the work of Trinh T. Minh-ha and how they address art, culture, and society today.
