This month we welcome Mari*, a driving force behind much beloved online radio station Worldwide FM. Interview (excerpt) down below.

MFM: Hi Mari, people might know you for being one of the driving forces behind Worldwide FM. Can you tell a bit about what you do there and how you ended up with that position?

M: I am “Head of programming and A&R” at Worldwide FM. I oversea programming, produce special guest shows and develop relationships with artists and labels. I’ve been working in radio for about 20 years. Starting with college radio in Boston, and subsequently I worked in New York and then Tokyo and now I’m based in London. So, I’ve always worked as a radio producer! From 2005, I produced Gilles Peterson’s daily show for 7-8 years on J-WAVE, one of the biggest FM radio stations in Japan. I also produced music events for the radio show and brought him over to Japan a couple of times, and this is how I started working with Gilles. 

MFM: How's the online radio scene in Japan actually?

M: Unfortunately, Japan is super behind with anything got to do with playing music online due to the strict and old school music copyright laws. Even Japanese radio stations are not broadcast outside of Japan. People still love tuning into AM/FM radio which could be a good thing, but it’s hard for music to be heard outside of Japan if the copyright law is too strict. Japan is probably one of the most complicated places to start an online music platform which people can tune into for free.

MFM: It seems that the pandemic brought many new online broadcasting stations, likely due to a lack of a stage for artists. How do you feel about this development?

M: It’s great that people realised there is so much potential in online radio stations during the pandemic. Hopefully, listening to radio will stay part of people’s life. Now the norm is back, people are getting busier and artists are back in the studio and touring. It is impossible to run a station in the same way as it was during the pandemic, so stations need to keep up and make relevant adjustments in their programming to fit into this changing world. Continuation is key to success, and also “sustainability” is another essential element to be considered, especially for independent online radio stations.

MFM: How important do you believe online radio is in the current field of music? What do you believe should be its main purpose?

M: With online radio there are so many possibilities and more freedom of expression, whereas traditional radio has to deal with regulations and politics. Online radio can build a strong sense of community as most of them were started out of sheer love to support music and culture. The interesting thing is that online radio can build a community that is Worldwide! Also, online radio could be a good start for young DJs and a place to develop young and up and coming artists as the presenting skills you need are much less on online radio than the traditional radio. There isn’t any format how online radio should be or sound like so there are more possibilities to create something new. I hope to continue searching and developing the unique and engaging platform where people feel welcome and part of by tuning in from any part of the world.

MFM: As a host yourself, what do you seek for in a show? 

M: I like to insert unique content in my radio show which is not just about presenting new music. I like to have some humour and personality in my show, and make people feel great with my music tastes. I don’t have much to say about other people’s show but being original is very important, people follow personality, great content and like to enjoy a show.

MFM: Any future plans at Worldwide FM you'd like to share? A scoop maybe?

M: We are building a new studio which will allow us to do more including live sessions! I cannot wait!

Recording of my set at Club Cosmos in Leeds....a special place with a special vibe in an old re-purposed mill....super chilled with people lying around on beanbags, tons of dry ice and lovely kaleidoscopic oil slide projections on every wall. Space IS the place!

Oh and set was recorded using vinyl, USB and Ableton Live...a real mish mash of formats!

Full Circle, also known as Alexis Le-Tan (Wonders Ovze World) and Joakim (Tigersushi, Crowdspacer), a long term project with close friends Le-Tan and Joakim music project and “concept band born from loving ears that want to re-process our electronic past.”

They’ve delivered some amazing edits of obscure Goa tracks and remixed the likes of Die Orangen, 10Lec6, and Tapan and released on Good Morning Tapes and Vladimir Ivkovic’s Offen.

“To complete a journey is to learn and to slow down and re-imagine is to enrich – Full Circle hears the hedonistic sound of the 90’s in a light that reflects a different space for our current time and beyond. Always bridging the gap between the past and present: they are and continue to go Full Circle.”

Shine A Light On Mix... Full Circle (Alexis Le-Tan & Joakim)

You never know whether Phoebé aka RAMZi from Montreal currently finds herself in human- or bird shape. As she shifts appearance, her sounds create a window into a deep and hidden world, crowded with all sorts of creatures and animals - fantastical but real and all originated in Phoebe's mind. 

RAMZi has nowadays certainly carved out her ecological niche, with several fantastic releases, including one in what almost seems her swampy Scottish parallel-universe - 12th isle, as well as her own imprint FATi Recordings or the ever fantastic 1080p. 

For this mix, RAMZi comes back with her BIGBIRD alias after some time away and she leads us through the last summer rays, as we slowly but surely descend into the rainy season.

BIGBIRD (RAMZi)

Ruaidhri, Stewart and Fergus are not only the world's best Scottish boy band, they also run the ever fantastic 12th Isle label, which has released an array of incredible music by the kinds of RAMZi, D.K. and Lo Kindre as well as a great debut album by the two mysterious Russians Dices and AEM Rhythm Cascade. 

Hailing from Glasgow, 12th Isle recycles aspects of Scottish mythology, as the trio create an aura of mystical science-fiction swamp utopias around their releases - communicated visually with the help of artist Al White, or in text by the best promo texter to probably have ever graced this earth (who wishes to remain anonymous). 

When Ru, Stew and Fergus (who some may know better as "evil" Ferg) play together on the other hand, their different perspectives and incredible knowledge really comes out in the most unpretentious and admirable fashion imaginable. So, we're very happy to have them all together onboard for this mix series, with this extended mix recorded live at the infamous RubaDub, meandering through everything from Ambient to Dub, Disco, Folk, New Age, House and Trance.

12th isle Mixes

12th Isle

@khotin has served up a free flowing range of multi-genre experiments since announcing himself with a soft-hued acid album on 1080p back in 2014. Now involved with running Normals Welcome as well as releasing on DFA, Pacific Rhythm and Public Release, his music is united by a distinctive take on melody, post-club melancholy and love for downtempo sounds. He crafts blissful songs filled with nostalgic feelings and is exactly the sort of artist in whom we can all find some sort of solace.

And this mix is a perfect tonic for reluctant bodies with its slowly cascading rhythms and soft focus melodies serving as a gentle New Year wakener. It's laced with perfectly dreamy pads and ramshackle drums that are never too forceful but always compelling. While often invitingly sombre in mood, the clouds do break along the way to bring moments of real lightness and joy just when you need it.

MFM: Welcome on board Lauren. How was your start of the new year? It's summer where you are now right? That must be nice :)

LH: Hiii! Thanks for having me onboard :) The New Year has been great. Spent time surfing & soaking up sunshine in Australia.

MFM: You moved back to Australia last year. What has been keeping you busy there since? 

LH: I moved from Amsterdam to Berlin at the end of 2019 and went to Oz in February 2020 for a holiday. COVID hit, so I ended up staying. An easy decision with nature, beaches, food etc. Although, I’ve pretty much been living out of a suitcase as the majority of my stuff is in Berlin. I bought a Yamaha RM1X & a Poly800 last year to do some music and learnt The Mandalorian theme tune. I’ve also been learning more about quantum mechanics & biology plus space, which actually led me to find more cosmic sounds in genres from IDM to new wave for example. Imagining space with a multitude of soundscapes is pretty neat. 

MFM: While many DJs jumped on the streaming bandwagon it looks like you kept rather quiet over the last months. Is that for a reason? Did you maybe find other ways to creatively let go, or...?

LH: Thought you wouldn’t have noticed - was secretly trying to pull off a “Homer Simpson disappearing into the hedge”. Streaming is a great way for people to stay connected given the circumstances. For me, having a live crowd is always part of my process. No crowd, no party (or a one person party - not bad for these days, actually...). Also not having any gear here made it hard, especially with lockdown and social distancing.

MFM: Things were going really well for you as a DJ, your career seemed to be in a lift. What do you now hope for when touring becomes an option again? Has 2020 changed your perspective? 

LH: Thank you for saying so. I was pretty overwhelmed by how often I was playing and am grateful for it. It’s still very much a “pinch-my-arm” thought. I really would love to continue sharing tunes & creating musical experiences in some capacity. I’ve been thinking about Music Supervision within film & TV, so have been spending time on the side looking into that.

MFM: I've heard quite a few DJs saying they lost the urgency or need to listen to dance(floor) music. How is that for you? Have you been keeping track with new music lately at all? 

LH: I’m always listening to different styles, especially non-club music as it’s sort of where I started. Although I’ve enjoyed the holiday of not having to find a billion new tracks before every weekend, I’ve still been following new releases & it’s been interesting to hear how music has been shaped by the pandemic.

MFM: How would you describe that shape shifting? 

LH: I noticed more people collaborating from afar due to social distancing, restrictions and general lockdown. I think this allowed for some experimentation in a way and often that leads to something surprising and new. Sonically and stylistically, I think 2020 was really diverse as opposed to previous years where there was definitely a “Sound of Summer” so to say. There were also a great deal of compilations for new music to support artists affected by event cancellations and club closures.

MFM: About the mix, do you actually prefer a mix request to come with some kind of theme or direction to it, or do you value the freedom more? 

LH: Both. It’s nice having a brief as it gives you boundaries & pushes your creativity. Sometimes too much freedom can make it difficult. That said, I’m always imaging stories & daydreaming, so often the imagery in my mind’s eye gives me a good starting point. Once I have an idea, I create a selection of music & work out a way to make it all flow until there is some sense of an emotional ark & musical journey.
