Symptoms Of Love [Mix/Feb.2010]

Idris Muhammad's birthday was November 13, and so I thought I'd do a tribute episode to the legendary drummer (RIP) whose sound shaped so much of jazz, soul, funk, rock and later hip-hop. I was very lucky to witness his greatness once, several years ago at the Blue Note when he was playing with Ahmad Jamal's group. So here's a few tunes - only one from his own releases, while the rest are records he played on and shaped in his own way. I tried to stay away from the well-known classics but don't worry, it's all super funky.

This entire set was made using tape techniques, an open window, a passing storm, neighbors moving in and out of the building, local birds, delivery trucks, and furniture scuffling in the front room of my first floor apartment in Ridgewood. These releases are intended to delve into the  spheres of sound poetry, spoken word, collage, new age, and a line in ambient work that toes the noisy border between contemplation and anxiety.
