"Hay muchas historias sobre cómo Wesley se inspiró para escribir este himno, pero ninguna ha sido completamente comprobada. Algunas de ellas son las siguientes. Al regresar a Inglaterra en el otoño de 1763, después de un tiempo decepcionante en Estados Unidos, el barco de Charles Wesley fue atrapado en una tormenta y parecía que todo estaría perdido, pero el 3 de diciembre llegaron a tierra. Wesley escribió en su diario ese día: “Me arrodillé y bendije la Mano que me había conducido a través de laberintos inextricables.” Algunos escritores dicen que durante la tormenta un pájaro voló a la cabina de Wesley y se escondió en su pecho buscando consuelo y seguridad.
