Woody Guthrie was born July 14, 1912.

The Pacifica Radio Archives delves into our collection to find interviews with Woody's wife Marjorie, longtime friend Will Geer, best friend Beth Lomax Hawes along with classic music and interviews with Woody. 
Notes: Up in the piney woods they were makin' moonshine.. dodging the government revenuers who hunted them between the trees like wild game. Each dawn the hollers echoed with the news they had survived another night. These cries were set to music. Blue ridge and blue grass. The voice of the people.


Then they headed for the mines. The coal beneath their homes wasn't going to walk into the daylight by itself. It had to be dynamited loose, hacked out, shoveled out Load by load, man and boy it had to be dragged to the surface.

Down South, meanwhile, it was King Cotton and the chain gang. The songs dripped with sweat this time, and heavy to match the delta heat and boggy fug. At night they plucked the banjo and slapped away the strings of another backbreaking day spent sharecropping another man's land.

Out in Oklahoma, meanwhile, the folks simply fled. Their land stripped to bare dust, they took to the road, to the rails, to the wind. Like yesterday's news, they blew along the byways to the four corners of the nation. Always lookin' for a hand up, sometimes reduced to a hand-out, seeking a melody to match their flat-iron twang, a voice for their homeless lyrics.

Most headed west. One was named Guthrie. Woodrow Wilson Guthrie.

Uprooted from the heartland, Woody would take the pulse of the nation, and set it to the rhythm of the rails. Migrant and restless, hard traveling would tune his senses to the plight of his country and its people. On the anvil of the land he traveled, he would pound the ringing hammer of cold truth and give voice to the very wind that blew them from their homes. From California to New York they were the songs of freedom, and justice... and they would redound from shore to shore.

29 kwietnia 2016 roku, nakładem legendarnego wydawnictwa Antena Krzyku, ukaże się dziesiąta płyta sygnowana marką Masala Soundsystem: album o przewrotnym i wieloznacznym tytule "Ziemia Na Sprzedaż". Będzie to pierwsze "pełnoprawne" wydawnictwo tego utytułowanego kolektywu od 2008 roku i albumu "Cały Ten Świat" (w międzyczasie ukazał się album z remixami oraz kilka premierowych publikacji internetowych powiązanych z międzynarodowymi projektami zespołu). Zgodnie z oryginalnymi założeniami programowymi przyjętymi przez grupę, "Ziemia Na Sprzedaż" to zestaw "rozumnych szałem" utworów, które muzycznie łączą tradycyjne etniczne instrumenty z kraju i ze świata oraz nowoczesną elektronikę. W warstwie lirycznej, polsko- i anglojęzyczne teksty zawarte na płycie wyrażają krytyczny pogląd wobec szeregu społeczno-ekonomicznych zjawisk, składających się na realny obraz współczesnego świata. Gościnnie na albumie wystąpili znakomici artyści z Turcji (Mehmet Polat), Słowacji (3CK), Węgier (Aron Szilagyi) i Polski (Shata QS). Okładkę zaprojektował ceniony polski grafik Rafał Wechterowicz (Too Many Skulls). "Ziemia Na Sprzedaż" dostępna będzie w formacie CD, LP (winyl) oraz w wersji cyfrowej.

On 29th April 2016, legendary Polish independent label Antena Krzyku will release the 10th album of Masala Soundsystem - "Ziemia Na Sprzedaż" (which in Polish can mean both "land for sale" and Earth for sale"). It will be the first "regular" album released by this well-known collective since 2008 and "Cały Ten Świat" album (however, between 2008 and 2016 the band released a remix album and a number of internet releases related to international projects of the band). The group stays true to its original "manifesto" from 2002 - so "Ziemia Na Sprzedaż" is a set of tunes which are "wise with anger". In terms of music, they combine traditional ethnic instruments and performative techniques from Poland, Middle East, India, Balkans, etc. with modern electronic music. Polish and English lyrics heard on the album express a critical view on a number of social and economical matters which form real and sad face of modern world. The release is enriched by guest performances of talented musicians from Turkey (Mehmet Polat), Slovakia (3CK) Hungary (Aron Szilagyi) and Poland (Shata QS). Artwork of the album was created by critically acclaimed and internationally known Polish illustrator Rafał Wechterowicz (Too Many Skulls). "Ziemia Na Sprzedaż" will be available as CD, LP (vinyl) and as a digital release.

From my CD "Don't Want Your Millions,"  (Brambus Records-Switzerland, 2000) with Bucky Halker on vocals and guitar, guest vocal from Robbie Fulks, Drew Enselmen on drums, Brian Dunn on baritone guitar, Paul Carasteia on pedal steel, and Steve Yates on bass.  Tune is from an old traditional that had been adapted by coal miner Jim Garland as a protest song in 1932.   The message still rings true, especially today.   We don't want your stupid millions mister, but we do want a fair deal and some justice.
