The Space Between by blod [sic] explores the vast empty space, the silence in the void, the sounds in that silence. Let these five instrumental tracks take you through these liminal, haunting spaces and soak in the haunting soundscape while you sink deeper into your subconscious.

This album was created entirely in a home studio in Auckland, New Zealand using an iPad. It’s a mixture of heavily processed bass guitar, alongside software synths (e.g. VHS Synth, ButterSynth) and hardware synths & samplers (Arturia Microfreak and EP-133 K.O. II). On top of that is of course a butt load of effects, which really brings out the void in all of this.

In what has become somewhat of a tradition, one of the tracks contains some vocals by my 5yo daughter, run through the Microfreak’s vocoder and slowed down just enough.

The flashing warning from the shuttle HUD confirms that no signals are getting out. This sits atop the notifications of dropping oxygen, stalling engines, and sputtering life support. You turned the sounds off to save power. You’ve saved it wherever you can.

On goes the spacesuit. It’s a two person job so it takes you longer than it should.

Three years monitoring this dead portion of space, listening. And now you can’t send a distress signal. About to be another silent moment in the larger quiet. It’s a fool’s way to die; trying to get a signal in a sector of space that has been silent forever.

You shake the transmitter, once in hope of it working, again out of frustration. You strike it hard enough to elicit a flare of pain across your hand and a burst of static in your ears.

Not static. Something more.

Your suit comes alive with a thousand readings, all fraying into unintelligible ravings. Static tears through your helmet as you instinctively reach up to cover your ears or tear it off. You feel the sound crawling on your skin, like insects swarming across you, at your throat, in your ears, your mouth. You retch on instinct, trying to shake them out.

Then silence. Your suit sensors go offline. And you feel it this time, in your bones, a single errant pulse in a section of space that is meant to be silent.

stalling engines

blod [sic] is a one-person electronic musician based out of Auckland, New Zealand. Under this artist name, Nick creates haunting music, often inspired by the electronic pop music of the previous century mixed with video game influences. “Think electronica or lo-fi with a dash of horror, or sometimes horror with a dash of lo-fi. Add a sprinkling of retro on top and you’ve got it.”
