Deep, sexy bass ducks and weaves through intricately laced organic drums--thuds and reverberations of animal skins stretched tightly across warm wood. Darkness and light is balanced impeccably amongst hypnotic grooves. The close connection between David Block and Yaygon Lamagaia is instantly recognizable in the depth of attention and care the latter gives to the former's source material. You can catch Kalya Scintilla this Thursday, when he hits Cervantes with Kaminanda for Bluetech's Spacehop stop, and over the weekend at Gem & Jam Festival in Tucson, AZ.

The chorus of this song is sung by Tzutu Kan (a balam ajpu member), one of the teachers at Solar Sound, who is an indigenous Tz’utujil Mayan hip hop artist from Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. In the song, he is saying the names of all the indigenous tribes of Costa Rica, to call them in, honor them, thank them, and connect with them:

We have decided that all funds raised from the sales of this song will go to Tzutu’s non-profit organization which teaches music, art, and language revitalization to indigenous Mayan children in his homeland.  


A note on the School of Mayan Hip Hop:
“Within the “Caza Ajaw.” School, elements of Hip Hop are reconfigured to create
alignment between Hip-Hop culture and Mayan culture. Caza Ajaw teaches Hip-Hop as
having three elements (Rap, Painting and Music) corresponding to the three stones
traditionally used to make a hearth (or xkub’) in Mayan culture. The use of the xkub’
hearthstones recontextualizes the elements of Hip-Hop from a specifically Maya
perspective. The songs taught in the school reflect the goals of language revitalization within the Maya Movement – encouraging children to use the language among themselves, the use of
Mayan languages in new domains, and an emphasis on the connection between language
use and cultural knowledge.”
