Valerian Hops has a hypnotic sleep inducing affect, and can induce calm, loosen inhibition & free the tongue, yet too much has disastrous consequences.
This song details a search for love through alcohol induced delirium, which often resulted in waking outside, in fields, by water, under the stars. Musically the song is influenced by Paul Giovanni's Wicker Man soundtrack, and has roots in English folk.

Barley, Hops & Yeast is the second track on the EP. It's been cleaned up and re mastered with strings.

Inspired by an article by Ian Macdonald about Nick Drake which said 'sensitive young people often have a horror of being understood for fear of losing their uniqueness, and in the process finding that they are not as unique as they like to think. The vocal was recorded in Catherine Hershey's Parisian home, with wonderful notes of morning bird song coming through the open windows.

Simple Jayne is the first track from the Sleeping Leaves EP.

Your December free download is a remix, and an important piece of music to me personally. Partly because it was the result of a chance string of events driven by my love of the original track and a fortuitous meeting with Frederic D. Oberland, one half of The Rustle of the Stars with Richard Knox. And partly because I love the intensity and feeling of the original which I have tried to convey in my own way with little regard for the usual rules of making music - ambient strings arrangement at one end, and a drum and bass wall of sound at the other, because that's what I felt was required to communicate the emotions I found in the original piece, inspired by "a musical passage through the North Pole explorer diaries".  
 
Here's what Richard and Frederic said about the original:  "We would like to think of this as a polar journey to the ends of the earth through the arctic sea. We kept in mind the first polar expeditions, Edgar Allan Poe's Dream-Land, the ships trapped or crushed by ice, the point of no-return, the minds sinking, the attempt on the Pole ending in disaster, the quest of the Northwest Passage, Erebus & Terror, the Mercy Bay, Mangazeya, Charles Francis Hall, Beechey Island, the Midnight sun and the Polar night."
 
It's very winter-y. And I'm very pleased Richard and Frederic agreed to allow me to give the remix away for free to anyone who would like to hear it this Christmas!

The Rustle Of The Stars - Sleeping Land - Max Cooper Rmx - Quotient 3/6

When I was touring in Mexico, I was lucky enough to have some days off during a visit to Mexico City, and took a trip to a nearby Toltec/Aztec Pyramid site called Teotihuacan. It's a beautiful place, but when I asked about its history I was told that most of the knowledge and culture of the people who built it was lost, with the arrival of the Europeans. Now it's turned into a rebuilt money making tourist trap, with the loss of its real meaning.

I recorded the space and sounds there with binaural mics, so I could try and capture some of the feeling of it, including a storm which came in, and then I wrote a strings part inspired by the feelings of the visit there. Tom Hodge brought the piece to life by playing a piano part in addition, and I loved the piano so much I decided to make two parts, the first with the piano only, combined with the binaural recordings and a randomising delay feedback network, and the second part with the strings. The first part of Teotihuacan is available exclusively from the free download Quotient Series, and the second part will be coming on the Artefact EP in April.

The Witnessing

I've been working on some new music with Tom Hodge, combining piano and electronic elements - the first track preview is below, with the full release coming 20th April.

For this track we made the drums from clanging around inside a broken piano, and then applying some complex editing, so they have an interesting partially live feel, even though rhythmically they are very electronic.

The piano came from a live jam over an initial chord structure, then lots of editing to find that one simple little hook in there. It felt like a reflective piece of music to me, invoking memories, so we chose "remnants". Nick Cobby has taken the concept further with an amazing music video, coming soon!

This is the single from my 2008 water-inspired album 'Divining' - I wrote, recorded and produced the album over three years, learning how to use Logic along the way.  'Written On Water' was played by Tom Robinson on BBC6 Introducing 'Hear the three years of perfectionism... A command of the keyboard reminiscent of Kate Bush, Tori Amos or Nina Simone'.
