And for my 3rd Native Tongues installment, so far (or 5th, if the solo endeavors by both Phife & Tip count as such), I'm delving into the archives of Black Sheep, specifically that of  Dres' aka D.R.E.S.

A little introduction: Black Sheep was one of the last additions to The Native Tongues, a movement of like-minded artists, such as The Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Monie Love & Queen Latifah (Chi-Ali came in a little later).

At the time, Black Sheep consisted of Dres & Mista Lawnge, and though details are sketchy about when exactly, and in what capacity they became involved, they nevertheless were all over De La's '91 sophomore set "De La Soul is Dead" and later that year released their thoroughly enjoyable debut album "A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing", fully produced by Lawnge, carried mostly on the mic by Dres, with Lawnge droppin' a few verses too and some features by Q-Tip & Mike G. of the JB's.

Somewhere spring '92, the album reached gold status, on the strength of the classic monster single "The Choice Is Yours", while roughly around the same time Native Tongues' youngest member Chi-Ali released his debut album "The Fabulous Chi-Ali" (mainly produced by peripheral members The Beatnuts, and with appearances from Native brethren like Phife Dawg, De La's Dave and ofcourse Dres, as Chi was like his little brother), but not very long after cracks started to appear within the Tongues; the most, but still cryptically, addressed by De La on their underrated '93 masterpiece "Buhloone Mind State".

So late '94, when Black Sheep released their, still alright, sophomore set "Non-Fiction", the crew was scattershot, resulting in an album with no input at all from the Natives, other than Chi-Ali.

Sadfully, the Sheep themselves went thru their own internal problems at well, so by '95, Dres & Lawnge split up too, with the former relocating to North Carolina, to start up a solo career, subsequently releasing "Sure Shot Redemption" in '99.

Lawnge & Dres regrouped in 2000, only to break up again, reportedly leaving an album, ironically titled "The Tragedy of Almost", in the can. 
Dres now mostly carries the Black Sheep moniker by himself, but there seems to be some talk to come back together again, so stay tuned to that.

In the meantime, I went thru the tons of non-album material by both Black Sheep and Dres solo + features, to trickle out those I dug and sequenced them in an album, worthy of the Black Sheep name.
