It’s hard to think of a label as reliably great as Lillerne Tapes. Since launching in 2007, the cassette imprint has become an anchor of the lo-fi and experimental ambient music world, its output ranging from contemplative dance to musique concrète to more abstract productions, with releases from the likes of Forest Management, mdo, Rhucle and Ulla Straus, to name just a few.

The man behind the prolific label is Gabe Holcombe. In 2021, he’s already put out three excellent releases from José María Delgado, jung dj and more eaze, all of which are worth checking out. While the label still retains its local, DIY feel, Holcombe doesn’t just release his friends’ music. Last year, he also tapped into Australia’s underground scene, releasing music from Melbourne’s Yunzero and Other Joe.

The label’s varied discography serves as an illustration of Holcombe’s sound palette; it’s rich in warm, fuzzy textures, tape hiss and subtle, often beautiful melodies. His mix casts a similar spell. Most of the songs come from ambient tape labels circa 2012—“reliable favourites”, in his words. Over 50 plus minutes, he weaves together music from the likes of Bermuda Link, Hakobune and Motion Sickness of Time Travel, creating the aural equivalent of a warm blanket.

Entering a new decade for The EDWIN Music Channel, we welcome French bon vivant Low Bat (@nighttravelonablanketshow). After organising the experimental “Yellow Light of Death” Country Festival in France this summer and finding time to plan some new content for Mutant Radio in Tbilisi, he also managed to squeeze in an exclusive mix, showcasing his love for ethnic atmospheres, driving droning darkness, Acid without Acid, all with a punk undertone.

Delighted to host @okodj Influence mix on Oddity Radio for @BFDMREC

@okodj : A set recorded for La Fête de la Musique event of Oddity Radio, without knowing in advance that it was going to be recorded and published afterwards, which I have liked! This allowed me to play without having the "post live" experience in mind, so it's really honest and raw. The energy was super nice and I have reconnected with a lot of parisian friends at this party !

Musically it's a compilation of my summer favourites, including a bunch of very different genres as always : post punk, sexy house, industrial, amapiano, you name it !

"A happy tape to match the shifting weather around and within us. For this mix I was thinking a lot about the temperature of music. It’s fairly dynamic, not a Spotify chill playlist so you can’t leave it baking unattended. I was inspired by a recent trip with some friends, when we embraced everything set to our ears. No ego or ‘let me educate you’ vibe that can sometimes occur on long car rides. We were just content listening and speaking through song, rolling and smoking ciggies out the window, revealing new angels in our personalities, hanging onto every note together, leaning into the spectrum and collectively making a wacky arc of sound. Special thanks to jo and mills, music sounds better with you both. Sometimes what happens in between can direct you to a similar path however it is those incidents that take you off course which make things more exciting. Not knowing what to expect and where you might end up can be challenging but if you follow your intuition and feel your way to the right place, the final destination is always worth the wait.

Sonic storytelling from Glasgow's ambient power duo Somewhere Press. The mix is, according to Caapi and Lizzie Urquhart, a musing on the Divine Feminine, which got me thinking about something James Hillman, archon of all things archetypal, said about the study of Beauty. Apparently (so says James) the ancient root of the word "Aesthetics" comes close to meaning "I breathe in" and the mixes, releases and vibe of Somewhere Press has certainly breathed something beautiful into Glasgow's musical landscape. We hope you enjoy this latest Forecast addition and urge you to keep an eye out for the upcoming "The Blue Hour" compilation coming out soon via Boomkat. We can assure you that you wont be disappointed.
