The longtime Perlon affiliate goes for big basslines and big grooves. 

It's 1996, and a young Fumiya Tanaka is shelling out hefty yet minimal percussive techno at Club Rockets in Osaka to an audience enraptured. Released as Mix-Up, the 90-minute recording captures Tanaka sounding rather like Jeff Mills or Surgeon. It's far cry from the sound he's known for today.

Fumiya Tanaka's creative arc has seen him move away from these thunderous sounds to warmer shades of house and minimal. Since 2016, he's found a home on the inimitable German minimal label, crafting out a distinctive sound within the labels roster with an affection for tumbling basslines and spooky atmospheres. 

From 1996 to 2023, Tanaka ran a party series in Tokyo, Osaka and Berlin called "Chaos," which encapsulates the ethos of freedom Tanaka brings to a party. "When you hear music you've never heard before and encounter unknown territory, you will be so happy and totally absorbed," he told us back in 2019. "I want to keep that feeling."

RA.964 achieves exactly that. Nearly three decades removed from his burst onto the scene, and after a good few years of asking, Tanaka's RA Podcast captures him in full house mode. Recorded at a Slapfunk party in Manchester, the Perlon maestro keeps the vibe funked-up, chunky and warm, punctuated by the occasional big breakdown and the odd lick of garage rudeness. No tracklist for now—but as Tanaka knows well, half the fun lies in the mystery.

KENKEY SPECIAL

'Kenkey Special is different in many ways from my other material. Whereas the tracks on the album (and the EPs) were often tightly harmonically and rhythmically integrated, these tracks are often more atonal and the rhythms more chaotic. There are hints of almost bebop-like phrases. Chord sequences move aimlessly to uncertain destinations...
There is a sense of disintegration and disconnection.

There is one major technical change that I've used for the first time here - phasing rhythms that aren't locked into the tempo (You can hear one example around the 33 minute mark in the high synth plinks).

The tone is distorted and uglier than before. The title came from a sign I saw in an African market (it wasn't in Africa). I didn't know what it meant at the time, but I found the words evocative, and that combined with some negative events started to shape this new material and the feel of the mix.'

DISCOFUTURE

'As I'm assuming is the case for most music fans, I often find myself fluctuating between moments of admiration and slight frustration with the state of new music. Admiration at new sounds I hear then, at times, frustration that sounds I want to hear aren't available. This unavailability can be due to stagnation within particular scenes or scenes just simply heading in different directions to what I'd prefer. That doesn't mean that the available music is substandard... nor does it mean I'm left bitter or unhappy either. Far from it, actually. However, it does often lead me to explore music from the past in an attempt to envision what these non-existent futures would sound like. This is a process I've done several times in the past and I often end this process by creating a "discofuture" mix in an attempt to create this imagined future... to have the past masquerading as the future. These mixes have been made for personal use in the past but Blowing Up the Workshop has been kind enough to let me share this one with you. I hope you enjoy it.'
