Today marks ten years since James Yancey, better known as J Dilla, passed away. Regularly considered as one of the greatest producers and musicians to ever grace hip-hop, his innovative techniques, meticulous accuracy and outright groove have been mimicked and revered since he passed in February 2006. His magnum opus, Donuts, was released just three days before his death; much of it produced from his hospital bed using just an MPC, sampler and portable turntable — a remarkable feat under any circumstance.

Raj Chaudhuri (aka Raji Rags) — head of music at Boiler Room and Livin' Proof co-founder — has been an avid Dilla disciple for a long time. Classic Album Sundays recently invited him to chair a talk on Dilla's finest work on the anniversary of its release date. What ensues is not only a highly informative and emotional examination of the 31-track project, but a cross-check of all the relevant events that lead up to its making.

When we hide our knives in the park, they sit inside plastic bags. Usually we get the plastic bags from the shop. Its the shop that smells like roast dinners on one side and sells sweetcorn sandwiches on the other. Its the shop with the guy who has a lazy eye. His one eye looks towards the ground. Mum says when the wind blew thats what made it that way. I usually buy the blue plastic bags, because someone told me that they are the lucky ones. Why do you think scratch cards are always blue? When we throw our bangers in the dark, they make a pop sound. I think they sound electric and look alive. But I got told they were just fireworks and to take my head out the clouds. When I die I think I’ll go up to the clouds and I think all the fireworks will be popping around me and when it happens I think on the last pop, that’s when i’ll go. I’ll be one streak of electricity travelling around the room. Up the stairs, in to the telly and out again. Why do you think we get electrocuted? It’s just someone trying to say hey? The flowers on the railings hang limp and silent, whilst the dogs bark and shout, they dampen in the rain. I think the flowers look lovely when they rot. They curl and go brown. Its the rotten that speak louder. Its the trees that move like blue plastic bags in the wind. Its the blue plastic bags that keep us safe. Its the bangers that make noise for us these days. And it was soo rotten. I don't know why people buy christmas crackers early, they just sit in a window? Shouldn't you be cold doe? I always ask when I walk past. You guys like to be six months early, don't you surely wanna play? in the park? maybe they wanna bury themselves early and pop? Because surely you don't wanna hang on the railing and rot like us? We’re the ones who sit murky, in this park, where its rotten.
