Hordijk Phantasma

First single from TRUPA TRUPA's new album, JOLLY NEW SONGS.

Nothing hurts harder than a surprise ending, and the title track of this album has a real face-slap of one. One minute you’re in bliss, carried away in a crescendo of spine-tingling post-rock guitars and soft, wordless oohs, the next you’re through - the song’s out the door, down the street, pulling away from the kerb and into a new life.

That the overall tone of Jolly New Song is so anthemic and - for this band - uncharacteristically triumphant, only makes having the rug pulled out from under you like this seem so much more cruel, so much more funny. Perhaps the harder the fall is, the more you have to laugh.

Because the Gdansk-based post-punk-psych band Trupa Trupa are sodden in a particularly cryptic kind of gallows humour. This isn’t just down to some glitch in translation - it could be in part due to the band’s art-rock origins and because their singer and guitarist, Grzegorz Kwiatkowski is an award-winning poet in Poland (incidentally, Trupa Trupa themselves have been shortlisted for the Polish equivalent of the Mercury Music Prize).

And then there’s the fact that the band’s name in English roughly translates to Corpse Corpse, which sounds like the punchline to some inscrutable gothic joke.

But being literal is easy. This isn’t John Lennon’s tedious, platitude-toting Imagine. This is The Beatles in a universe where their most famous song was Tomorrow Never Knows; a Pink Floyd that split when Syd Barrett’s mind did.

There are no Wonderwalls here. Instead we have Coffin, a uniquely morbid love song that comes in the form of a seriously ear-wormy pop ditty. “Lying with you, without a move, the coffin so smooth…” Grzegorz cheerily croons, before the tune tumbles into a catchy major-chord chorus about burning trees, people and birds.

You can dance to this album - check out the to-die-for funk groove that propels the Can-like Falling. You can trip out to it - check out the psychedelic meltdown that mutates the Wurlitzer fairground music of Only Good Weather into something dark and psyche-scarring.

Sometimes it sounds like the end of the world (the bleak roar of Mist), but sometimes it sounds like the start of a new one (the unashamedly gorgeous To Me).

The Quietus declared Trupa Trupa’s critically-acclaimed 2015 album, Headache, to be “their first moment of true greatness. This is incredible work,” and suggested that these musicians were on the cusp of a Dog Man Star or Daydream Nation - something genuinely game-changing and era-defining. Jolly New Songs is that album and it does not disappoint.

Biog:

Trupa Trupa are Grzegorz Kwiatkowski (voc, guitar), Tomek Pawluczuk (drums), Wojtek Juchniewicz (voc, guitar) and Rafał Wojczal (keys, guitar). In 2015 the band was signed by Blue Tapes and X-Ray Records (Tashi Dorji, Mats Gustafsson, Katie Gately, Father Murphy), the result of which was "Headache", a critically acclaimed album released on CD and cassette. In October 2016, "Headache Remastered" on vinyl and CD was re-released by the French label Ici d'ailleurs (Yann Tiersen, Matt Elliott/The Third Eye Foundation and Stefan Wesołowski). In autumn the band will release a new album called "Jolly New Songs". The record will be an international collaboration between Blue Tapes and X-Ray Records and Ici d'ailleurs.

おらが町のラストクリスマス

"Night Fishing" is the debut track from Northern California's BLACKMAGNET.  Traumatized dissonant emotional doom, with vocal pop hooks reminiscent of Duran Duran, dynamically bi-polarized as a wall of feed backing guitar choruses you like the harmonics of Godflesh.  But Robert Smith couldn't write a chorus hook this catchy, this beautiful.  Silence, cavernous whispers, and heavy handed pop doom that will make you feel scared like the first time you heard Khanate, except Antony and the Johnsons are opening the show.  Don't trip.

BLACKMAGNET - "Night Fishing"

The music on this record was made using a vast array of rare analog machines Andrea had the chance to work on at the Willem-Twee synthesis studio in Holland (built with the iconic Studio di Fonologia RAI as a blueprint). Most of the percussive sounds come from an Analog Computer, which has been rarely used only as a music instrument (its main purpose was flight simulation). In fact, during the Cold War times it was also used as measurement tool by civil engineers and even by the army. 
To my knowledge, very few artists have given a new context to the such device, which I have found absolutely unique-sounding and gave me enough inspiration to compose a whole new album focused on it. 

At present, no one has ever officially released music recorded at the Willem-Twee synthesis studio.

The music on this record further explores cyclical, minimal and hypnotic concoctions – a particular  investigation focused on unusual rhythms that Andrea had already started on his well-received ‘Mama Matrix Most Mysterious’, released on Type in 2015. Think walls of subfrequencies, snappy rollercoasters of the mind, labyrinths in hyperspace & snakes eating their own tails.

Zimní Král means “Winter King” in Czech and was the epithet given to Frederick V Elector Palatine (king of Bohemia), the last of a legacy to actively support alchemy as a means of studying reality, the self and their inter-reflections.
