They have the honour of kicking off the inaugural Blue Lotus Festival 2013 and will be parading on the streets of Pushkar at 4pm. Guaranteed to blow up a storm!

Bijal Khan - Bringing Alive the Poetry of the Saints

Bijal Khan is a spiritual singer, from the Meher community of Barmer, who interprets the Sufi kalams (the word kalam comes from the Arabic for conversation). Through his dynamic range of notes and rustic voice Bijal addresses the divine authority, expounds the eternal truths and extols the universal virtues of justice, peace, unity, secularism and love: truly bringing alive the Poetry of the Saints.

Nathu Solanki - Boiling Beats: The Kettle-Drummers of Pushkar

The melodious shehnai and the resonating beats of the nagara kettle drums open up the last day of the Blue Lotus Festival, performed by Pushkar’s very own Nathu Solanki. The nagaras are loud, booming percussion instruments (the precursors of orchestral timpani) played with unerring accuracy and skill. As an integral part of the royal courts, the nagaras played the role of inspiring the spirits of the masses during times of war, although now they are more often heard at weddings, religious functions and various festivities. Be prepared to feel the rhythm!

Bachu Khan - From Thar to Star: the Voice of the Langa

From the Thar Desert comes the unique caste of musicians known as the Langas, whose main profession was to sing and dance for royalty. According to the centuries old Darbari (royal) tradition, Langas still sing love songs in their mother tongue, Marwari, depicting longing for a lover, the joy of reunion and the hopes that lovers have for the future. Bachu Khan has given hundreds of performances abroad and is always eager to experiment and improvise with different music styles.

Ramzan Khan – Enchanted by Snake Charmers

Ramzan Khan belongs to the famous musical community of the Langas and feature the murli - a woodwind instrument - unusual in being able to create root, melodic and rhythmic notes at the same time. It’s uniquely shrill tonal quality is surprisingly seductive.  The Khan use these distinct instruments to unfold stories of mythological serpents, deserts and mystery.

Sharif Idu - Impassioned Troubadour of the Heart

Sharif Idu is a Sufi Dhadhi artist who excels at bringing to life four hundred year old compositions recounting the tragic love stories of Punjab.  Sharif infuses such depth of emotion into his songs that even without understanding the words the listener can emotionally relate to his folk tales about the heart-rending extremes of love!

Ghevaram - The Legend of Pabuji

The ancient storytelling tradition of Pabuji Ki Phad is performed by two temple priests called Bhopas and is used to teach mythological stories to the next generation. What makes it special is the use of beautiful cloth paintings lit by the soft light of lamps, that gradually reveal the episodes: a combination of music, theatre and mobile temple. Accompanying the enchanting performance is the voice of Ghevaram recounting the 14th C tales.

Raza Khan - Sufi Sublime

Raza Khan is a Sufi singer of qawwalis - songs of devotion to God; his performances are profound, spiritual and electrifying. Raza is fast making a name for himself on the international scene as an outstanding performer. His unique voice stretches over many octaves and he is able to channel the most intense of emotions and depths of faith into sonic waves that permeate the very fibres of your being and leave you both shaken and stirred. Raza Khan’s music is simple in purpose, striking in execution and intense in effect.
