Confetti is the beautiful uplifting new track from Pearse McGloughlin & Nocturnes.

Originally written on a ukulele with his daughter, the song was reconstructed to feature vocoder melody, vocal samples and fragmented synth lines while still maintaining the sweetness of its inception.

'Confetti' was produced by Darragh Nolan of Asta Kalapa Studios with whom Pearse has worked on several releases, including 2016's The Soft Animal. It also features the keys playing of Billy Donohue.

The stunning artwork is from Provence-based, Irish artist John O’Grady’s painting ‘The Spirit of Water’.

'Ag Ól, Ag Ól ag an Garbhóg' is the new single from Pearse McGloughlin & Nocturnes.

Originally written by Pearse and long-time collaborator Enda Reilly, the song is a reflection on friendship and place and particularly on memories of youth.

As many will know the Garbhóg (Garavogue) runs through Sligo Town, winding its way from Lough Gill to the Atlantic. Some of the imagery evoke ecological concerns ‘dath ór tine ar an uisce’ (‘the colour of fire on the water’) brings to mind the spate of wildfires we’re seeing with more and more frequency. Some of the melody was inspired by a walk around the side of Knocknarea near Strandhill and feeling there, that a place of natural beauty, reasonably unchanged, can connect you to the past.

Nocturnes are a revolving cast of musicians, regularly featuring Pearse McGloughlin (vocals, keys, guitar), Enda Roche (percussion, bass) and Billy Donohue (keys). They pedal ambient folk noir which in short means they write songs which are atmospheric and evocative of nature and the world around us.

BETTING POOL by PEARSE MCGLOUGHLIN & NOCTURNES

Pearse McGloughlin and Nocturnes return with new single 'Betting Pool', out April 19th via Bluestack Records. Taken from forthcoming LP The Rest (due September 20th, 2019)

'Betting Pool' is the second single from Pearse’s fifth album, The Rest, coming on the heels of Irish language single ‘Ag Ól Ag Ól ag an Garbhóg’ and will be launched at a special show at Dublin’s Workman’s Club on April 25th.

About the song, Pearse says: “I wrote ‘Betting Pool’ about being drawn to something that’s difficult to escape. So when the song starts you have this person who’s hungover and frazzled and who wants to turn their life around. They’ve been waiting on a gamble that’s never paid off. [Maybe it never will]. It’s about how a fantasy can be both exhilarating and destructive”.
Bringing to mind groups like The Cure and War on Drugs, the recording features Enda Roche (drums) and Billy Donohue (keys) and was recorded with Darragh Nolan of Asta Kalapa studios in Wexford. 

The breadth of Pearse’s interests and inspirations for The Rest will play out across the forthcoming album, touching on societal concerns, universal themes, personal experiences living, working and dreaming in Ireland.
Betting Pool is out April 19th.

The Drift and Waiting For You (out February 12th, 2020 on Bluetack Records) are the new singles from The Plainest Truth.

The Plainest Truth is a new collaboration between Joe Harney (Deaf Joe) and Aisling Browne (Solar Taxi, Cut Once), rooted in the shared experience of their long-standing, long-distance friendship. Debut singles The Drift and Waiting For You provide a reflection on how life can often set us apart, yet we somehow remain linked to what really matters.

Hailing from Waterford, Joe and Aisling first got to know each other through their city’s vibrant music scene where a hundred bands were buzzing, bonding and disbanding faster than anyone could keep up with. They played many gigs together as part of Katie Kim’s live band before Joe uprooted to Scotland. The pair remained good friends and kept in touch, eventually agreeing to start sharing musical ideas, sketch out ideas for songs, melodies and lyrics between Dublin and Edinburgh. Without the pressure of recording under a title, songs slowly began to take shape and crystallise into something meaningful. When they finally got together to record properly, in Joe’s words, “...we just felt it worked from the get-go, that very first track we tried, 'Waiting For You'. Our voices felt like they had that elusive bit of magic you're always chasing. The way they sat really plainly together, without any effects or studio trickery.”

And so, the essential elements of The Plainest Truth were created: “It's a band realising our shared ideas for songs from afar, over distance. Lyrically, it's about missing people, needing them, the connections you can't deny and what that longing does to your head. The music is unhurried, a kind of dreamy take on classic folk songwriting, it takes its time, unconcerned with much else going on in the world. We're just focused on writing big, honest songs to allow our voices shine together.”
