THE ARTISTS: Skarob is a collision of bass music and dub reggae from the duo of veteran Brooklyn rasta Doctah X and Eastern European expatriate Rekloos transplanted to the unlikely heartland of America. The project features a variety of collaborators and remixers including Dr. Israel, Subatomic Sound System, Abba Blade, and more, stacked with numerous selections packing dancefloor firepower for electronic DJs and reggae selectors as well as others for certified headphone head bobbing, from dancehall bangers to dubstep smashers to deep, rootical dub grooves to sunny, psychedelic, atmospheric journeys. Recorded by Skarob. Mixed and arranged by Rekloos in Columbus, Ohio. Mastered by Emch at Subatomic Sound in New York City. Both members of Skarob write and produce, but unlike many of today’s electronic production duos, Doctah X also performs vocals and guitar, drawing on his decades past history growing up in Kentucky as a blues guitarist, touring and recording with Cream’s Ginger Baker, playing with legends John Lee Hooker and Albert King, as well as work with The Last Poets’ Umar Bin Hussein.

THE LABEL: Founded in 2000, Subatomic Sound is a New York City record label, production team, and sound system crew spearheaded by Emch and pushing the envelope of dub, reggae, dancehall in the context of electronic bass music with digital and limited edition exclusive vinyl releases of forward thinking collaborations with icons such as Lee “Scratch” Perry, David Lynch, Anthony B, Elephant Man, and the late Ari Up of The Slits, as well as new school torchbearers like Dubblestandart, Jahdan Blakkamoore, and many more.  Subatomic Sound also founded the annual Dub Champions Festival in the USA and Europe. Subatomic Sound Radio airs on Brooklyn Radio and for three years ran on KEXP’s Radio New York, 91.5FM broadcast which transmitted to a footprint of 11 million listeners.

For the final instalment in our compilation reissue series, we’re proud to present the 2022 edition of More Bass than Space.

We were unable to track all the artists down, and sadly were unable to license the one track we most wanted to re-present, but are glad to make eighty percent of the original collection available.

This is what we said at the time:

“Three years on from the cult classic, Dubbed on Planet Skunk, the Dubmission crew return at last, taking the bass all over the place with their usual blend of styles, sounds and cultures. More Bass than Space finds an array of artists from many different genres further exploring the boundaries of dub.

Some would question whether it could be called dub at all. For Dubmission, dub is the ruler, the guide, the inspiration - dub's arrangements, techniques and basslines can all be heard here, in one way or another. This is music under the influence of dub, not just some digital emulation.

Dubmission's blend of blissful beats, twisted roots and psychedelic steppers makes More Bass than Space a welcome addition to any music lovers collection - after all, we all need more serious basslines in our lives.”

02 - Ott - One Day I Wish To Have This Kind Of Time

Pitch Black return with their fourth and possibly their best album so far. “Rude Mechanicals” embraces all that is good about dance music and electronica, spiced up by the trademark Pitch Black blend of echoes, delays and deep, fat basslines.

The band have always been avowed fans of music in general (as opposed to any one style in particular), and it certainly shows here: the album kicks off with the lush “South of the Line” before dubbing it up, year 3000 style, with “1000 Mile Drift”. “Sonic Colonic” kicks the tempo up a gear as the only real four-to-the-floor stomper on the album. “Bird Soul” reminds one that Paddy Free spent years producing Salmonella Dub, as it takes their guitar driven drum and bass style and wraps it in an ambient dub envelope.

“Harmonia” is an exquisite piece of electronica, reminiscent of Speedy J or Black Dog. It is followed by “Rude Mechanicals”, which marks a departure from the norm for the boys, featuring rapper KP from the infamous Sunshine Soundsystem, who waxes lyrical about the destruction being wrought on the planet by our environmental ignorance and general greed. “Fragile Ladders” provides some much needed breathing space before “Please Leave Quietly” destroys what is left of the bass speakers”!

Rude Mechanicals is a genre busting excursion in sound, heaving with warm basslines and complex rhythm’s, topped up by haunting melodies and, for a change, cutting social commentary. To adapt a previous quote about them, this album is like “Underworld meets King Tubby”, in all the best ways possible…………………………………..
