"Places We Could Have Gone" was initially a piano sketch for my 2018 solo piano album Sanctuary Sessions. I recently revisited and recorded the idea in the same space, then further manipulated the recordings through my modular rig to add atmosphere. The track took on an incredibly nostalgic quality that made me reflect on the past year in lockdown and dream about all the new people and places that we might have missed out on during that time.

Recorded mostly late at night while his family is asleep, Blurstem is a piano-centric offshoot project of Elskavon, Minneapolis composer Chris Bartels' ambient moniker.

Bartels went into a piano-writing frenzy in the fall of 2018, when Blurstem was birthed, and decided to pursue collaborations with over half of the debut album, releasing September 2019.

Moons Lost collaborative input was from close to home. Friends Alex Berglund and Josh Leininger (Rosen Poem) also reside in Minneapolis. Alex, a former co-worker of Bartels at a commercial music house, provided the many layers of strings - violin, viola, cello.

Minneapolis composer Chris Bartels has been writing ambient music under the name Elskavon for a decade, and Blurstem was born as a piano-centric offshoot of the project. 

He and his wife were gifted an old spinet piano when they bought a house in 2015. Always slightly out of tune, a little dusty sounding, and very much imperfect, the instrument has its own character. But it wasn’t until Chris cut up an old sweater and taped it to the strings, so as to avoid waking up their children at night, that his love for that character really took form.
