After a patient has undergone ACL surgery, rehabilitation is bread and butter in many physiotherapy/sports medicine clinics. Many BJSM podcast listeners will be expert in this role. If you are less expert and wondering if there is an ‘optimum’ way to guide the patient back to sport, Dr Andy Franklyn-Miller provides some food for thought. 

He discusses some novel ways of assessing a patient’s progress after ACL reconstruction, advocates for the use of video in the clinic, and shares the dynamic tests he uses before allowing a player to return to sport. He shares exercises that both test, and help rehabilitate athletes in this setting.
 
Dr Franklyn-Miller is a sports physician at the Sports Surgery Clinic in Dublin, Ireland. He has published widely in sports medicine and his book, Clinical Sports Anatomy (2011), co-authored with Eanna Falvey and Peter Brukner, is an international best-seller. Andy Franklyn-Miller - Tuning up rehabilitation after ACL reconstruction

E212 | Much of the scholarship on the Hanafi school of Islamic jurisprudence, which had its roots in the sociopolitical context of the 8th century Iraq, focuses on the early centuries of that school's development. Meanwhile, recent scholarship on the later periods emphasizes the transformations within the Hanafi jurisprudence in the early modern and modern periods, particularly as a result of the increasing role of the Ottoman state in the process of lawmaking. Dr. Samy Ayoub presents a different approach on Ottoman Hanafi jurists, who maintained the integrity of the legal discourse while recognizing the needs of the times. In this episode, Dr. Ayoub shares some of his reseach on the question of continuity and change under the self-desctibed “late-Hanafis” from the 16th century until the making of mecelle, the first attempt at codifying Islamic law, during the late 19th century.

Samy Ayoub earned his Ph.D. in Islamic law from the School of Middle Eastern and North African Studies and the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona. He earned a B.A. in Islamic jurisprudence from Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt, in 2006, where he received systematic instruction in Ḥanafī jurisprudence. He also received an MSc. in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, UK, in 2008. Dr. Ayoub’s research interests cover the history of the early modern Ottoman Empire, contemporary Arab legal regimes, Muslim ethics, and the Arab renaissance (nahḍa).

Jill Cook is BJSM’s deputy editor with particular emphasis on physiotherapy. She is a professor at Monash University, Frankston, Australia, and a renowned international tendon authority. Jill Cook on the continuum model of tendinopathy

Dr Richard Frobell is an associate professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at Lund University in Southern Sweden. His background is in physiotherapy but he’s worked as a specialist in clinical diagnosis for over a decade in a dedicated knee service program. In this podcast he discusses his recent BMJ paper, which is a follow up to the NEJM on ACL injury treatment.
