6th April 2022: A very windy day at Lytham St Annes RNLI lifeboat station as the volunteer shore crew take the Shannon class out of the boathouse on its mobile slipway to undergo beach trials.

You'll hear all kinds of things including a cyclist and dog walkers passing by, as well as an aeroplane flying overhead just as the launch tractor passes the microphones — a veritable onslaught of heavy machinery! 

You might also notice that the tractor, lifeboat and mobile slipway are so large that they act as a windbreak for a short while, the wind returning as it passes the microphones.

However, the real surprise comes right at the end when I hear something for the first time — the huge tractor and mobile slipway travelling at speed, sounding more akin to a haunting air-raid siren as the hi-tech unit makes its way across the sand.

I visited Lake Vendel in Uppland to hopefully record the rarely heard song of the Penduline TIt. I was richly rewarded. Windy conditions but I sat hidden in the reedbeds roughly 20 m away from  a nest nearing completion. The male often sang in the nest or in the near vicinity, and both the male and female built on the nest. Much more complex song than I anticipated!

A powerful thunderstorm unfolding beneath the alpine peaks. Captured  inside a small abandoned mountain hut.
Several extremely close lightning strikes shake the wooden structure, creating an intense and immersive soundscape.
