Last week it has been raining almost every day, also with some nice thunder storms. The small creek close by has finally come back to life again after the presummer drought. Håga, Uppsala. August 4, 2023.

Water Is Life

In cold winters, you can hear the sound of cracking in the forest. The sound doesn't come from animals but from tree trunks cracking when it's really cold. When the temperature drops, the wood shrinks and if the wood shrinks enough, the trunk cracks at the weakest point. The cold cracks run along the trunk as the wood twists.

I ran a simple noise test with the onboard microphones on the ZOOM H1e and ZOOM M4.
First half track with level as recorded, first H1 and then M4; second half track levels NORMALIZED up to 0.1 dB, first H1 and then M4.

2025.10.25 Spring Thunderstorm at Tapanappa, Deep Creek.

A compilation of Sika deer tri-whistle calls, recorded in County Leitrim during the rutting season (September to November). These were recorded using unattended AudioMoths, hence the distant and quite noisy quality. Worth noting that despite its name, the last example is composed of 4 calls, then again the call is shorter/faster than the 'proper' tri-whistles.

"Sika deer originate from Japan, These were introduced by Lord Powerscourt in 1860. A few years later some were moved from Powerscourt (Co. Wicklow) to enclosed parks in Fermanagh, Kerry, Limerick, Down and Monaghan. The present wild deer herds mostly originated as escapees from these parks in the early 20th century." Sika Deer Tri-Whistle (Medley)

Some new gear purchased this week in the form of a Radius Mini-alto Windshield setup. So far very impressed with the well thought out ergonomics, ease of use and modularity. Everything we could ever have asked for at a really competitive price. To complete the setup I also purchased a Schoeps Mk 8 Capsule to make a compact MS setup for on the road. 

This is recording in MS at its widest setting, panned full L and R. It sounds really good even when you collapse the MS slightly but I've kept it full open so you can hear all the elements. The stereo effect is pretty impressive and the ambience really shows on that Mk 8 capsule, with the fireworks bouncing off the hard surfaces of the housing estate. 

No EQ applied at all, just a hard limiter to control some of those louder explosions and make it overall easier on the ears. 

Gear: Sound Devices MixPre 6 ii + Schoeps Mk 4+8 MS inside the Radius Mini-alto 115 without Fur. 

If you haven't bought a Radius windshield yet, don't hold out, they're awesome. 
Also something to listen out for, not all the 'wizz' sounds are fireworks, as there were lots of Redwing moving that night too. Feel sorry for them, I bet they're frightened to death hearing all that whilst trying to migrate at night.
