[TN022] Nørbak - Marah EP

The rapidly rising star that is Nørbak, started releasing music only little over a year ago but hasn’t stopped since. The Portugal born producer, just 21 years old yet, now drops his debut EP, ‘Marah’, on The Nursery series, containing two originals and two remixes by no other than Farceb (ARG) and Moddullar (PT).

Nørbak’s two original tracks are simply called ‘Marah I’ and ‘Marah II’, no nonsense titles that are very much in line with the productions themselves. The opening track is a carefully assembled loop, topped off with merely hisses and rattles, which sounds simple but is actually executed very effectively. ‘Marah II’, although being slightly dreamier than its predecessor, continues in that same style where every sound serves its purpose.

That, in combination with a more aggressive remixes by Moddular, a familiar face with Dynamic Reflection, and Farceb, make this a truly versatile EP that will probably see lots of dancefloors this summer.

Italian-based imprint Evod LTD has gathered together another star-studded group of excellence that includes four individual tracks on the Alchimia EP from Argentine Jonas Kopp, label head Evod, Zadig from France and DJ Surgeles in the Netherlands.

Tresor, Oscar Mulero’s PoleGroup, DJ Deep’s Deeply Rooted and his own Construct Re-Form are only some of the labels the Parisian Zadig has appeared on since the early ’90s, and along with his seductive vinyl only sets, he is a highly respected veteran of the scene.

For this DT:Premiere we selected his track “Mono-Form” that’s a dark and powerful affair. A tornado of twisting bass and thundering percussion create an apocalyptic taste of destruction and cement this beast as a tenacious floor weapon.

Like Brassaï, Roger Semsroth has spent the last decade trawling the shadows and writing in the dark. But where the seamy streets of nocturnal pre-WWII Paris provided the canvas for Brassaï’s widely heralded photography, it’s the sonic sluices of post-war Berlin and from the self-contained netherworlds of the city’s underground techno nexus that Sleeparchive derives from.

Taking its title from one of Brassaï’s famous sequence of prints, ‘A Man Dies In The Street Pt.2’ presents the second round of the eight track project developed by Sleeparchive (along with three secret locked grooves.)

As ever the genius is in the reductive palette, that here Semsroth paints into a rich splay of emotions mimicking the initial anxious discovery of the body, the curiosity of the gathering crowd, the excitement and building anticipation through to an aggressive and pummelling sense of realisation on the close. But is it at the loss of life, or the loss of spectacle? As Brassaï toys with ambiguity in his photographs, Sleeparchive’s music is just as hazy, deep and full of shady nuances that, like treasure, only appear if you’re willing to keep probing.

As Planetary Assault Systems, @Luke-Slater is an innovator of psychedelic mindfuck techno. Across a lengthy catalogue that stretches back into the 90s, the music’s bleepy, polyrhythmic loops are as recognizable as they are genre-defining. ‘Plantae’ is Slater’s first release as PAS on Ostgut Ton since ‘Arc Angel’ (2016) and covers the spectrum of PAS’s different strains while remaining grounded in Slater’s uncanny funk and knack for developing oblique melodies and rhythms over longer stretches. Deepness and hypnosis come as much through duration as sound design.

For Slater, ‘Plantae’ is made for Berghain, where he is a long-standing resident. In his own words: “I’m sure it’s no surprise that when it comes to putting together a release on Ostgut Ton, PAS takes on its more mind-altering, otherworldly quality by natural cause, quietly reflecting the dark sweaty nights and days at the club; at the point, the common neural coupling, of us all together. PAS has been part of Berghain and Berghain part of PAS for a long time. All of these tracks needed to pass the Berghain test in my sets first stop.”
